HEART O' THE HILLS was the last film she would make for a distributor not her own, and marked a movement away from the childlike roles she had become known for. Pickford stars as Mavis Hawn, an Appalachian girl from Kentucky whose world is invaded by a land-grabbing villain (Sam DeGrasse) from the city. Mavis vows revenge for the tragedy inflicted upon her family, and along the way she falls in love with Jason Honeycutt (Harold Goodwin). Adapted from the best-selling novel by John Fox, Jr., the film is an often brutal depiction of poverty, and a melodrama that achieved both critical and popular success, while extending Pickford's acting range considerably.
