The makeup and costumes are great, but for something so otherwise creative, the story is obvious and predictable.
Great review for people like myself who aren't too into the Hellboy series. After seeing such good reviews for this film I decided to rent it. I haven't seen the first film and I haven't read the comics. I tried not to take this movie too seriously either. 30 minutes in, however, I had to stop watching. It starts with a young, skippy Hellboy who can't move his mouth due to the makeup. Then there's the bad guy who does really cool moves with his sword on his free time underground. One of the details I knew about Hellboy is that he has this unique hand thats huge. When the bad guy introduces another baddie that has one uniquely huge hand, I cringed. Then Hellboy and his crew go to fight the tooth fairies. His crew includes two normal guys, dressed in suits and armed with a pistol each. These two guys get eaten alive (predictably) and Hellboy and his crew don't feel bad or say anything about it. Following that, Hellboy flies out of a window and lands on a car in the middle of a huge crowd. He sees a tooth fairy and shots it, striking a cool pose in the process. The camera zooms out and shows a huge crowd of people right behind the tooth fairy that gets shot. I don't think I was being too technical and not fun by thinking that was weird. The guns in this movie don't shoot bullets...they just blow up whatever they are aiming at. At this point, I assume I'm too old to be viewing this movie or the humor just isn't my type. Reading other reviews and comments, I see that there is a huge, passionate fanbase. I loved Pan's Labyrinth, but this movie's critical success confuses me. Maybe I should check out the original Hellboy first...

you SHOULD see the first movie. but if guns that big were possible, they probably do no less than cause things to blow up. just sayin. also, why cringe?

Yes, the story is obviously simplistic and 'predictable'. I respect your opinion, but I found the film to be a good time(discounting the terrible love story between the fish guy and the elf chick) and I really have no knowledge whatsoever of the Hellboy milieu.
