The popular Nickelodeon cartoon HEY ARNOLD! gets its big screen animation debut with this feature, directed by Tuck Tucker. The plot finds the kid with the "football-shaped head" (Arnold, voiced by Spence Klein) working overtime to save his New York City neighborhood. Paul Sorvino supplies the voice of the sinister corporate bad guy Scheck, who intends to bulldoze Arnold's block in order to make room for a shopping "mall-plex." With the adults too passive to lift a finger in their own defense (or else profiting from the deal), it is up to Arnold to devise a plan. Luckily he has friends to help him out, like Gerald (Jamil Walker Smith) and Helga (Francesca Smith)--the abusive little girl who harbors a secret crush on him. Arnold develops a crush of his own, on Bridget (Jennifer Jason Leigh), the slinky local super hero who helps him out with a little industrial espionage. Other recognizable voices include Christopher Lloyd and Dan Castallenata (Homer on THE SIMPSONS) as Arnold's Grandpa Phil. The simple, colorful animation and amiable story should make it a hit with young children already enthralled by the television show. Series creator Craig Bartlett cowrote the script with Steve Viksten. [More]

Reviews for Hey Arnold! The Movie
Just sit back, count the movie references, and be thankful you're not watching Snow Dogs.
It will likely produce the same effect on your kids that it did on the tykes in our large audience -- it lulled many of them to sleep.
A step up from Jimmy Neutron and two steps down from The Rugrats features.
This may be the first cartoon ever to look as if it were being shown on the projection television screen of a sports bar.
Arnold is like a Little Leaguer struggling to hit the ball. It swings high, it swings low, but it never connects or seems to establish who its target is.
Unfortunately, it's also not very good. Especially compared with the television series that inspired the movie.
Offers enough compelling dramatic moments and adventure to keep Arnold fans entertained.
Static, repetitive, muddy and blurry, Hey Arnold! would seem to have a lock on the title of ugliest movie of the year.
A drab jumble of meaningless action, dull characters and animation as flat and superficial as its story.
An acceptable way to pass a little over an hour with moviegoers ages 8-10, but it's unlikely to inspire anything more than a visit to McDonald's, let alone some savvy street activism.
`Hey Arnold!' has some visual wit ... but little imagination elsewhere.
The mantra behind the project seems to have been 'it's just a kids' flick.' Translation: 'We don't need to try very hard.'
Rudimentary animation and a less-than-witty screenplay result in a film that plays like a simple installment of the series.
