Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen). Set in the 1800s, this family film chronicles the triumphant victory won by Frank and his mustang Hidalgo in the Ocean of Fire, an often-fatal competition in which the best riders and thoroughbreds race across Middle Eastern deserts. For Frank, who is known in the west for his prowess as a Pony Express rider and the winner of long-distance horse races, the lure of the Ocean of Fire is not only the $100,000 purse but also the clear challenge--both of which prove irresistible, and inspire him to travel across the world for this life-altering experience. With sweeping landscapes that evoke John Ford westerns like STAGECOACH and THE SEARCHERS, HIDALGO features enough racing, rivalry, and romance to befit any action film. But the race also provides a vehicle for the story of Frank forgiving himself for his participation in the Wounded Knee slaughter and accepting his part-Indian ancestry. The film's message, highlighted in a particularly moving scene where Frank invokes the spirits of his Native American ancestors, is that the key to happiness is accepting yourself as you are. [More]

With a nice mix of “Indiana Jones” and “Seabiscuit,” “Hidalgo” stands out as the year’s best adventure film so far.

Slow, plodding and arduous, though spiked with occasional hiccups of excitement.

Completely lacks the nobility, statue, and credibility due such an amazing story, even if it is an old man's folly.

An adventure that never met a cliche it couldn't saddle, mount and ride for a butt-numbing two hours and sixteen minutes.

It is pure popcorn fun, whether there is a grain of truth in the story, or if it is merely an entertaining western tall tale.

A big, beautiful film that's thoroughly enjoyable even if it never tries to be meaningful.

The screen language of Hidalgo invites nostalgia for adventure films without satisfying it.

Sidesteps most of the pitfalls of the genre while delivering thrilling action, vivid characters and a memorable story.

at its most effective when it distills everything down to the love story between a man and his horse

Entertaining, although it suffers from uneven pacing, one tangential and overlong plot development near the climax, and several mediocre process shots.

It's a manqué of a rousing adventure tale and not the real thing. You're constantly aware of the gulf between how the movie wants to excite you and the halfhearted execution.

It could have been a good adventure story. Disney should have stuck to Hopkins's story whether it was true or not.

Memories of movies past trot through Hidalgo, but with all the substance of a mirage....Mortensen plays Hopkins, a cross between the Marlboro Man and Indiana Jones.
