Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) is an unassuming adolescent whose family has been cursed for generations. One day, after Stanley is falsely accused of stealing a pair of sneakers, he is sentenced to 18 months at Camp Green Lake. But when he gets there, he discovers that this camp is really more like a prison. Under the supervision of the fiery Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and goofy Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson), Stanley and his cohorts must spend each day digging holes in the desert, in order "to build character." Or at least that's what The Warden (Sigourney Weaver) says. When Stanley finally gathers up the courage to escape the camp, he and fellow escapee Zero (Khleo Thomas) stumble across a secret that will expose Camp Green Lake for the evil place that it is, and erase the Yelnats family curse forever. Director-producer Andrew Davis (THE FUGITIVE) performs a miraculous feat with HOLES, crafting a family film that is smart, funny, and engaging. Sachar's story teaches enormously valuable lessons about respect, teamwork, and honesty, making HOLES a must-see for individuals everywhere. [More]

The film's fidelity to the plot and tone of the book is a credit to [Sachar and Davis].

Suffers even more than the Harry Potter films from a compulsion to be faithful to the source material, including cramming in a head-spinning assortment of characters and subplots.

Credit Davis with caring about preserving the book's fiber. I wish he'd been able to find a style of his own to match.

[Holes] could've benefited from some judicious editing (at close to two hours, the movie occasionally borders on interminable), because there's far too much going on here.

Wry humor, thrills, redemption, and a convoluted, almost epic plot that’s fun to unravel.

The graceless and restrained result is missing whatever sense of the magical elevated the book.

Though the disparate narrative threads are well integrated the film still lags periodically, but its real liability is on the special effects front.

It makes passable preteen entertainment but comes off as clunky and heavy-handed in most of the places it should be graceful and enchanting.

The movie pays homage to the book by preserving its potency and building upon its strong foundation. It's hard to imagine a reader who wouldn't approve.

One of the few recent movies I have seen that plunged me into that rare, giddy state of pleasurable confusion, of not knowing what would happen next, which I associate with the reading and moviegoing experiences of my own childhood.

This movie, if it is as successful as it deserves to be, might just open slapstick-happy moviemakers' eyes to the idea that kids will flock to a story that explores dark issues.
