With her quick wits and stamina, [Shue] steps to the fore, and we'd watch her even if Bacon weren't invisible.

Consensus: Despite awesome special effects, Hollow Man falls short of other films directed by Paul Verhoeven. This flick over time degenerates into a typical horror film.

When his test serum makes a laboratory gorilla disappear and then successfully brings her back, Caine decides that it is time for him to be the next guinea pig. He and his team are ecstatic when the serum work. When the antidote fails to work as it did on the gorilla, however, Caine finds himself in the initially enviable, but ultimately horrifying predicament of being permanently undetectable to the human eye. Faced with the opportunity to perpetrate any crime he desires without fear of apprehension, Caine gives in to his basest desires. But when he learns that his that his ex-girlfriend and assistant, Linda McKay (Elisabeth Shue), is involved with their fellow co-worker Matt Kensington (Josh Brolin), Caine goes over the deep end, and is willing to kill anyone who tries to stand in his way, including his trusted fellow researchers. Director Paul Verhoeven (BASIC INSTINCT) puts a contemporary spin on the classic INVISIBLE MAN tale, turning it into a funhouse-style stalk-and-slash film with some of the most impressive visual effects the screen has seen. Reviews for Hollow Man
This expensive turkey will disappear from theatres more quickly than its protagonist fades into nothingness.
The film becomes so much urgent nonsense, its killing spree [is] neither cheaply thrilling nor even more cheaply cathartic.
Hollow Man is a major improvement on director Verhoeven's recent turkeys -- Showgirls and Starship Troopers -- but not quite up to the promise shown in such early work as The Fourth Man, or even RoboCop.
Paul Verhoeven's exceedingly violent, surprisingly pointless invisible-man tale nearly warrants a trotting-out of the Union-Tribune's dreaded 'dog' designation.
Too bad they couldn't figure out a way to make the whole movie invisible.
There's a lot of noise and blood and action, but the main thing that's invisible here is the point.
How much more interesting would it have been to have an all American guy, like Tom Hanks, turn invisible.
