He is desperate for a comeback, but when he is at last offered a deal--for a $60 million blockbuster--it's from his ex-wife producer, Ellie (Tea Leoni), and her lover, Hal (Treat Williams), the studio head who had stolen Ellie away from Val ten years earlier. At his agent's (Mark Rydell as Al Hack) urging, Val takes the job, but Val is struck with psychosomatic blindness on the eve of production. Yet he is still determined to direct the picture. HOLLYWOOD ENDING is a return to form for Allen. He is excellent as the fading auteur struggling to find his vision. His dependence on Al and Ellie is both pathetic and hysterical. Leoni and Rydell are outstanding, as is the rest of the eclectic cast, which includes Isaac Mizrahi as a production designer, Debra Messing as Val's chippie girlfriend, George Hamilton as a vain Hollywood tagalong, and Tiffani Thiessen as a sexpot actress. The film is filled with wonderful New York City locations, including Central Park, the Plaza hotel, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle, Balthazar, and more. HOLLYWOOD ENDING is a funny, poignant look at a filmmaker fighting public and professional scrutiny to craft his art, not unlike what Allen himself has gone through in his career, especially in the 1990s. Reviews for Hollywood Ending
A few more of these and his Hollywood Ending could be a very, very dark one
[Allen's] best works understand why snobbery is a better satiric target than middle-America diversions could ever be.
Evokes some laughs, but the acting is mediocre and the story line --well, it's a typical Hollywood ending.
... those of us who favor the director’s more “pretentious” films can’t help but be struck by what appears to be a failure of nerve
The premise may be outrageous, but the film is full of witty lines, delightful scenes and sharp performances.
His films remain entertainment akin to watching a stand-up act: disposable stories, great sense of humor, one-liners that I quote incessantly for months.
As his conclusion, Allen plays into the ironic comedy he intends with his title, Hollywood Ending, and it comes as a jolly repartee to his American critics.
It lacks critical mass and droops in the middle like a worn-out saddle horse.
This farcical motherlode is largely wasted here, with Allen recycling gags so moldy you half-expect one of those giant hooks from vaudeville to enter the frame and yank him right off the screen.
This is, by far, the worst film of Woody Allen's career, and that includes "Everyone Says I Love You". Painful.
It just misses being in the pantheon of Allen's great works. And it's not easy pinpointing exactly why.
It's a filmed doodle from the sketchpad of a former perfectionist who once upon a time knew better than to start shooting a script that he clearly hadn't finished yet.
Woody Allen pokes fun at the industry, and at himself - but it's funny when he says it.
Watching "Ending" is too often like looking over the outdated clothes and plastic knickknacks at your neighbor's garage sale. You can't believe anyone would really buy this stuff.
The frog prince of New York comedy again wallows in the middle of the frame as various familiar faces, namely various princes and princesses from television, dart about him like so many flies with a death wish.
Hollywood Ending is the most disappointing Woody Allen movie ever. He has a great cast and a great idea. But the execution is a flop with the exception of about six gags that really work.
