Matthew Modine is Bobby, an aspiring filmmaker in the 1980s who buys the rights to a popular Canadian novel. But as he embarks on his mission to create a powerful and moving work, the film demons begin to put him through the ringer. Not only does his star actor begin to lose his sanity, but the novel's author intends to sue him for ruining her poignant work. Unfortunately for Bobby, a documentary crew is along for the ride, capturing every ridiculous moment with unflinching immediacy. Featuring supporting turns from Alan Bates, Deborah Unger, and Jennifer Tilly. [More]

Reviews for Hollywood North
What the film lacks in bite and originality, it makes up for in humor and charm.
...the movie seems content to simply exist as a wacky comedy (how else do you explain the presence of Alan Thicke?), which is somewhat disappointing.
A curious artifact: A movie about an era that produced scores of movies most people never saw, and arriving nearly a generation after most people never saw them.
Hollywood North loses bite, first by being exactly the kind of movie it satirizes and by being so dated.
