  • Holy Man
  • The always hilarious Eddie Murphy (DR. DOLITTLE) stars with Jeff Goldblum (JURASSIC PARK) and Kelly Preston (JERRY MAGUIRE) in a refreshingly funny hit that elevates shopping to a nearly religious experience! A stressed-out senior executive at the Good Buy home shopping channel, Ricky Hayman (Goldblum) is praying for a miracle that will lift the network's lousy ratings and save his job. Then, from out of nowhere, "G" (Murphy) walks into his life! An outrageous, self-styled inspirational guru with a knack for showing up where he isn't exactly wanted, "G" proceeds to wander in front of the cameras just long enough to exude the irresistible star quality that will make him the sales-boosting savior Ricky's network has been looking for! Also featuring a host of well-known celebrities in a sidesplitting series of comic infomercials -- you're bound to be another satisfied customer with nothing but praise for HOLY MAN!

    A thought-provoking but uneven comedy.

The script has many glaring flaws, chiefly, that it never explains why G's inspirational speeches about steering clear of materialism and useless products actually sell the things in question.

Whatever your conclusion, Eddie Murphy does come off as the least slimed by the proceedings. Is it luck, smart self-marketing or divine intervention?

This film is funny, but despite its subject matter, or perhaps because of it, this is a movie without a soul.

Nothing in this film works except for an occasionally frantic funny line reading from Goldblum and maybe a couple of the products being sold.

It's always watchable, sometimes enjoyable, never special.

It's also troublesome that Murphy, a generally charismatic actor, is downright dull here. He and Goldblum are curiously flat in their line readings; they don't seem convinced by the story they're asked to act out, and with good reason.

Not even Eddie can save this ill-conceived mess of a movie.

While Murphy probably has what it takes to make the comedian-to-serious actor transition, he needs to do what Martin, Williams, and Carrey did: hold out for a good script.

There's a terrific movie to be made about home-shopping and the folks addicted to it, but 'Holy Man' is not that film.

[Murphy] is the only thing that isn't deadeningly predictable here, but it might still be worth the price of a ticket to see him continue to have such fun being a movie star.

There's precious little comedy here in this tired romantic comedy set amid a television-age satire.
