The legacy of legendary dancer and choreographer Honey Daniels lives on in spirited 17-year-old Maria Bennett. After a brush with the law, Maria has returned to her gritty Bronx roots to rebuild her life with nothing but a talent for street dance and a burning ambition to prove herself. It's fine for the genre, but one day it'd be great to see an urban dance flick with more ambition.
For dance fans, it'll work. But for anyone else watching the movie, there are better films out there, and who's going to watch this if they're not a dance fan?
This genre is now as conventionalised as kabuki and noh theatres in its acrobatic choreography and dramatic cliches.
Just like every other modern dance movie you've ever seen only with less plot and little drama.
Nearly every dance film cliché is done to death here, but at least the hip-hoppery is spectacular, played out before a panel of judges who make Cheryl Cole look like a genius.
The dance sequences have a certain energy and aggressiveness but the plot is predictable, the performances are bland and the dialogue makes your toes curl.
It does at least deliver decent dancing. But so do many music videos, and they struggle to sustain interest over four minutes, let alone the 112 that this will steal from you.
Compared with the redemptive pizzazz of something like Streetdance 3D, there's a soul-crushing, lockstep quality to the lighting, the editing, and the soundtrack.
We've jitterbugged down this path of talented-street-dancing-kid-making-it-to-the-big-time so many times before it's a wonder it doesn't have its own heritage trail through the streets of New York.
