The ultimate flapper, Bow simultaneously exuded sensuality and youthful innocence, lighting the silver screen with both dramatic and comedic touches. Her performance in HOOPLA is excellent in spite of the heavy Brooklyn accent that ultimately helped destroy her career. The plot itself is standard It-girl fare. Bow plays a scantily clad dancer in a traveling carnival who, egged on by a bet, seduces the innocent teenage son of the carnival owner. Once she's done so, Bow finds herself falling in love with the boy (Richard Cromwell) and must face up to the obstacles that stand in the way of their romantic happiness. The eighty-five-minute film includes an extended climax filmed at the 1933 Chicago's World Fair and features Bow in one of her skimpiest costumes ever. HOOPLA was directed by Oscar-winning director Frank Lloyd (THE DIVINE LADY, A TALE OF TWO CITIES). [More]
