Using a book by a homosexual to mend a marriage?? Really knocked the doc's credibility to shame. I know why not use a married couple that have been married for decades advice instead of a counterfeit

First of all, your last sentence made no sense whatsoever: "I know why not use"?? Second of all, how does recommended a book on how to mend a marriage written by a homosexual knocking the doc's credibility to shame? Methinks someone's a little bigoted. Third of all, the book isn't even about mending a marriage, it's sex advice.

homophobe alert. homosexuals know just as much about sex and marriage as straight couples because their relationships are just as valid. its a tough concept, i know. you're not entitled to special rights because you're straight, white, and male. hate to be the bearer of bad news, David Hughes, but gays are equal to you, women are equal to you, other races are equal to you - you're not better than anyone else because of the way you were born, and no one else is less than you because of the way they were born.

This movie was a combo of old people's porn lite, and a rather morbid look at a stale 31 yr. marriage. Hard to believe the ending with everyone on the beach, repeating marriage vows, kissing, hugging etc. Somehow I don't think that is how a marriage so depressing suddenly turns around and becomes a big party. As far as comedy, there were a few moments, and a few funny lines. What a waste of Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.

Enjoyed this movie greatly. Depressing? Sure... at first. The topic of two people married for over 30 years, bored and with nothing to excite them anymore? Depressing topic.
But the movie does an excellent job of being sensitive to the fact that through it all, they still do love each other but have become accustomed to a mundane way of living and clearly need help.
to say a movie is bad because its depressing though. That's not a fair review IMO. There have been pleny of movies with depressing topics but end positively and serve to provide hope or lift your spirits in the end.
This story is sensitively told, all characters are distinct an well portrayed. Streep is a great actress no doubt but I was most impressed with Tommy Lee Jones. His trademark role is someone gruff, confident... borderline arrogant.
But in this... he plays almost against type by being basically a cynical curmudgeon. A creature of habit that I think anyone would be bored to know. he puts up a tough front but peel back the layers and he is hurting, and vulnerable.
Carell was suprisingly excellent and totally convincing as the therapist. I thought they might have him inject some of his trademark humor but nope. He plays it straight and comes off as incredibly competent, sure of himself, and totally believable.
Surrounded by a quagmire of mediocre to awful movies, this is one is NOT one of those. I believe this movie will be one of the years better films.
