Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

Critic Consensus: Hotel Transylvania 2 is marginally better than the original, which may or may not be enough of a recommendation to watch 89 minutes of corny, colorfully animated gags from Adam Sandler and company.

"Hotel Transylvania 2" is an unfortunate throwback to about 20 years ago, when animated movies were more widely accepted as cinematic babysitters.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the greatest movie Adam Sandler and Kevin James have ever made together. I believe this is called "damning with faint praise."

So much attention has been paid to crafting a relentless string of in-jokes meant for ancient horror fans that the storyline limps from tired blood.

Yes, every joke in the film is low-hanging fruit, but not a single one is left unpicked.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is not total garbage, but it leaves you with a horrible aftertaste. [Full review in Spanish]

Although stirringly scored and ingeniously animated, it's creepy time at Hotel Transylvania 2 -- and not in a good way.

Audience Reviews for Hotel Transylvania 2

More or less as good as the first, but I'd rather take the charming and fast-paced gags of a Hotel Transylvania film over any other film in Sandler's filmography any day. This film even manages to squeak out a simple moral on familial differences. Also a running gag about Drac's inability to text is ace. Rating: 62

Energetic, character-filled and zinger-packed but not out-and-out fang-tastic, checking into Hotel Transylvania 2 offers some Universal Monster entertainment despite not being as universally likable as Pixar or as monstrously funny for kids as DreamWorks. Regardless of other animation houses that turn out a more rounded product, these flicks can't help but draw in adults who love classic film riffs and smart alecky takes on pop culture. What this means for children without the capacity for a quarter or half a century's worth of experience living in the Zeitgeist, however, we'll never know. Instead, so far as the script, they're left with flimsy lines like "Maybe you've let humans into your hotel, Dad, but you haven't let them into your heart" and laying on the moral on super thick (be yourself) ad nauseum. In the words of a vampire caricature (one that Drac rips upon, mind you): blah, blah, blah! Kids will love the knockabout fun, yes, but the humor's mostly geared for the older set. Thankfully, Tenndy Tartakovsky's sharp style of animation direction is as eye catching as it is eye popping as it is awesome eye candy.

In this PG-rated animated sequel to the hit creature feature comedy, old-old-old-fashioned vampire Vlad (Mel Brooks) arrives at the hotel for an impromptu family get-together, putting Hotel Transylvania on a collision course of supernatural old-school and modern day cool.

Though the flick's certainly not a wash, there's a shameful aspect to Hotel Transylvania 2 in that it's not as appealing for every member of the family. It actually ends up to be one of Adam Sandler's best and most promising projects. As annoying as his working with the same band of idiots is in movies like Grown Ups, this ensemble works perfectly here. Also, his sophomoric brand of humor gets used to winning effect here. Of course, the zingers prove much funnier and, yes, intelligent as well. If only the smirking parents didn't have to explain everything to their kids. Adding the great Mel Brooks to the roster of vocal talent, however, definitely helps this flick to more than break even.

Bottom line: Little Munsters

A big step below the first movie. The plot was kind of stupid about the kid getting fangs and the Dracula trying to make it work. Some parts are cool but didn't have me laughing as much as the first one. The characters were ok and the new human characters were not that great. I enjoyed the movie but I would rather watch the first one again instead of this. That is all I can say about this movie. There were also too many kids in the theater talking loud with 2 babies and I hated it! Leave your babies at home!
