Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)

Critic Consensus: Hotel Transylvania 2 is marginally better than the original, which may or may not be enough of a recommendation to watch 89 minutes of corny, colorfully animated gags from Adam Sandler and company.

Critic Reviews for Hotel Transylvania 2

All Critics (81) | Top Critics (17)

"Hotel Transylvania 2" is an unfortunate throwback to about 20 years ago, when animated movies were more widely accepted as cinematic babysitters.

A delightful, perfectly formed sequel to the animated ghouls-are-good original...The animation is gloriously kinetic. What more needs to be said? If you liked the first one...

The jokes are just as easy and fall just as flat, but the film is saved somewhat by a cracking last act.

Still better than most Sandler-written movies.

Like the first entry in this animated Sony Pictures franchise, the film is spirited, engaging, and has an idea: it's about mutual tensions between the undead and the living, who have forged a truce up in the Carpathians.

Essentially, if you enjoyed the original, you'll enjoy the sequel, but it's more of the same. Can't we try a little harder than a gag-filled outline?

Audience Reviews for Hotel Transylvania 2

A pretty stereotypical sequel, Hotel Transylvania 2 continues the crazy antics of Dracula and his family. After becoming parents Mavis and Johnny go to LA to visit his parents, meanwhile Dracula takes his new grandson on a trip to his old haunts in order to show him how to be a monster. The voice cast does a fairly good job and Mel Brooks has a fun cameo role. Additionally, the animation is well-done, with some interesting designs and impressive action sequences. Also, the comedy is rather clever and delivers a lot of laughs. However, the plot is incredibly formulaic and predictable. Hotel Transylvania 2 isn't quite as fresh and exciting as the original, but it's still a delightfully entertaining family comedy.

Hotel Transylvania is not an animated masterpiece and won't be winning any awards, but kids are going to love it. I found myself having a fun time watching and if you enjoyed the first one then you will love this sequel.

More or less as good as the first, but I'd rather take the charming and fast-paced gags of a Hotel Transylvania film over any other film in Sandler's filmography any day. This film even manages to squeak out a simple moral on familial differences. Also a running gag about Drac's inability to text is ace. Rating: 62
