Gutsy, emotional.
A most engaging, moving, and provocative film.
Daldry's direction is flawless and some of Hollywood's finest performers do some of their very finest work.
Like The English Patient and The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Hours is one of those reputedly "unfilmable" novels that has bucked the odds to emerge as an exquisite motion picture in its own right.
It captures the feeling of a long, forgiving gaze.
Everything is connected and interconnected and frame and buffed to a high gloss, with a thin patina of existential lament spicing things up.
The Hours makes you examine your own life in much the same way its characters do, and the experience is profound. The Hours is what movies are supposed to be...
Unfortunately, the picture failed to capture me. I found it slow, drab, and bordering on melodramatic.

The Hours is a skilful, mature portrait of womanhood through the generations. In just two hours, viewers will be moved by an engrossing, interlinking story, its connections and how each woman presents a brave face to the world but is utterly alone,
Meryl Streep is breathtaking.
Brilliantly acted and impressively directed, this has Oscar-bait written all over it, even if it doesn’t quite add up to the sum of its parts.
One of the most touching films ever made.
Daldry envisions a world where EVERY woman is born both depressed and a lesbian. That’s their natural state, and to deny it is to somehow rob them of their ultimate goal in life: to run away from their problems or kill themselves.
While The Hours is certainly a triumph of photography, impeccable production design, costuming and editing, it is the cumulative emotional impact of its writing that carries the day.

For fans of the novel: Top notch! For those who have not read it: good enough to make you want to read it, which says a lot!
