A parade of weird characters comes onstage to do their turns, but the underlying plot grows murky and, amazingly for a Miyazaki film, we grow impatient at spectacle without meaning.
who asked your 1000 year old *** what you think about this masterpiece? why don't you go show pictures of your grandchildren to strangers.

People like this guy are the reason we can't have nice things.
May 8 - 12:25 PM
I agree with Mr. Ebert.

Genjibunbun, please. Go back to your troll cave.
Sep 22 - 08:39 PM
As what you can expect from a Robert Ebert critique; utterly stupid, & full of bull. Basically as I mentioned before, all of your critiques are against great movies such as these.

"Basically as I mentioned before, all of your critiques are against great movies such as these."Have you read his reviews of ANY other miyazaki movies?
Dec 28 - 10:21 PM
Steve, you are a moron. He has given a postive review to every other Miyazaki film that he reviewed.
Jan 18 - 11:06 AM
Not only positive, but he gave the other four Miyazaki films he review 4/4 stars, and categorized My Neighbor Tororo as a "Great Movie"
Jan 4 - 02:02 PM
Roger Ebert loves Miyazaki
May 13 - 01:12 AM
I thought this was a great film, full of gorgeous animation, adventure and character. But when compared to Hayao's other films, it is a rather disappointment. Old Roger has a fair point.
May 13 - 01:14 AM
I'm pretty sure Frisby2007 is just a troll. He just loves disagreeing with people, so don't encourage him.
Dec 6 - 02:08 AM
This is something you don't see everyday...
May 7 - 11:29 AM
Yeah, I just watched this film (finally), and I had pretty much the same reaction. I love everything else I've seen by Miyazaki, but this one just didn't click with me.

I don't know why people always attack Ebert's age and senescence whenever he gives a negative review to a good movie. Now, I am a huge Ebert fan, but I don't agree with his points on this movie, what so ever. I am also somewhat baffled that he would give Ponyo 4 stars but only 2.5 stars to HMC. I thought Ponyo was, by far, Miyazaki's worst movie. That being said, he's still a great critic; but, whose opinion that I don't always have to agree with.
Mar 9 - 03:43 PM
I survived Ponyo by pretending Miyazaki was having a great joke at our expense.
Dec 6 - 02:11 AM
I survived Ponyo because it was a better movie than this one...
May 9 - 05:30 AM
I agreed, this being one of Miyazaki's weakest works, but I did not go so far as to fail it.
Apr 18 - 08:05 PM
Everyone has their own opinion, I guess, but I thought Howl's Moving Castle was totally worthy of Miyazaki's other awesome works. :/
Jun 30 - 10:32 AM
eah, while there are a lot of people who thinks this movie is lagging a lot, i must disagree with Ebert. this movie personally has reserved a place in my heart, for all time.
Dec 20 - 02:56 PM
Roger, this time you've gone too far.
Mar 30 - 07:26 AM
I don't get why people are being so hard on Ebert here. Never did. As much as I like this movie, the man has a fair point: Howl's Moving Castle is frustrating to sit through at points. The story is muddled and all-over, and it's hard to really tell what Miyazaki was trying to say with this one. And considering that Ebert is a huge fan of Miyazaki's, I'm sure it hurt him as a fan to actually criticize him.
You guys and gals are entitled to disagree with him, but that doesn't make Ebert's points any less-valid. And, just speaking personally, it's my least-favourite Miyazaki movie next to Porco Rosso (which I take issue with for other reasons.) I honestly think this movie doesn't get enough criticism as is, to be quite honest.
Still, I guess I'm too late with this one. I just think people are taking one rotten review a little too personally, is all. But that's just me...
