Clara Bow was at the height of her fame when HULA was made, and Paramount knew how to exploit it. Produced before the onset of the code, the first shot of Hula offers plenty of skin as she swims in a Hawaiian river. But Hula isn't licentious, in spite of the poor influence of her rowdy drunken father (Albert Gran)--she's just a young nymph who loves the outdoors, spending most of her time horseback riding. That is, until Hula lays her eyes on Anthony Haldane (Clive Brook), an English engineer recently arrived in Hawaii. Hula falls hard and fast, but when Haldane saves Hula from a runaway horse, he explains that he is already married. Broken-hearted and drunk at her birthday party, Hula dances with longtime admirer Harry Dehan (Arnold Kent) to make Haldane jealous. It works, but Mrs. Haldane suddenly appears. That won't stop the mischievous Hula, who will use bribery, dynamite, and whatever else it takes to get rid of her rival. Paramount delivered just what audiences expected from Bow in HULA, and that light fare proved a great financial success. HULA retains what it set out to create--a dominating role for one of the silent cinema's brightest stars. [More]
