Romantics swooned over him in The Notebook, and critics loved his turn as the doll-toting lead character in last year's Lars and the Real Girl -- and if the latest rumors are correct, Ryan Gosling could soon be adding "action hero" to his r�sum�.

According to Moviehole, Gosling "might be" Paramount's choice to take over the central role in the studio's next attempt to resurrect the studio's dormant Jack Ryan franchise. The fictional historian/CIA agent/President, created by Tom Clancy for 1984's The Hunt for Red October, has been the focus of multiple Clancy novels, four of which -- Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears -- have been made into movies.

Turnover in the role is nothing new -- Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck -- and a new film in the series has been rumored since 2006, when Moviehole reported that Paramount was interested in filming a script (now rumored to be titled By Any Means Necessary) not based on any of Clancy's books.

Even if he isn't the new Jack Ryan, however, Gosling is still lining up work: Variety reports that he's signed on to star in Andrew Jarecki's feature directing debut, All Good Things. The movie, described as a "period love story/murder mystery," will be filmed from a script by Jarecki, Marcus Hinchey, and Marc Smerling. According to Variety, Kirsten Dunst is in negotiations to star opposite Gosling. From the article:

Set in the 1980s, story centers on the scion of a New York real estate dynasty (Gosling) who falls for a beautiful girl from the wrong side of the tracks (Dunst). But the fairy tale ends when the girl disappears. As a down-and-out detective stumbles on info that may lead to the truth, the political stakes get higher and people close to the case end up dead.

I don't know... I think Harrison Ford is the best Jack Ryan, and Ben Affleck in second. Alec Baldwin was ok. But I'm not sure. Nice to see a new face, although Affleck only played the character once.

I don't know... I think Alec Baldwin was a much better Ryan than Affleck, and Hunt for Red October was a much better film than Sum of All fears. I really don't mind Gosling taking over. I think he could do a great job with the roll.

I'm just not sure about veering away from Clancy's material... it sounds like Hollywood is trying to make money on a formulaic action sequel.

Making a Jack Ryan movie not based on a Tom Clancy novel is like making a Jurassic Park movie not based on a Michael Crichton novel.

I agree with The Pin and alsanali. Whole reason of those movies was the screenplays being derived from Clancy's books.. I hope if Clancy isn't involved that Gosling will have the sense that it appears he has had in the past in choosing roles, and steer clear of this.

I may not like some of the movies he has done, but usually he makes smart choices and his reviews usually dont get panned.

Anywho, Ryan, stay away LOL

What about bringing Harrison Ford back to play the same character, for the book where Jack Ryan becomes Vice-President (shortly after Clear and Present Danger). That would be awesome and a cool follow up to Indy.

I actually thought they were all decent choices, and Gosling is an interesting choice. He's a really good actor. So, hopefully it turns out well.

Blech, Affleck did not make a good Ryan. But The Sum of All Fear was also the worst of those movies. Gosling isn't a bad choice though. Let's just make the movie as good as the first 3.

As far as Clancy goes, I don't find him to be much of a writer. I think his stories work better as movies. He gets a bit too technical for me. I mean, he tells the backstory of the missile and who created it and what factory it was built in and which worker screwed in flange #8b. It's a bit tedious.

eh... we shall see.. we shall see... I'm a Ford fan myself... no one can tackle and take a punch like Harrison... so I'm skeptical... but anyone would be better then Affleck

Clancy's characters make Steve's felt friends look like CGI masterpieces. I think they would have to pay a guy with Gosling's chops a truck load of money to play a one-dimensional jock. And with California real estate, I wouldn't blame him for taking it.
And I agree, there's got to be something else in the Clancey canon worth putting on screen. His protagonists may be cavemen, but the stories themselves are worthy of every conceivable cliched accolade (sizzling, nailbiting etc)

Affleck was the best.....yea I said it....he made the franchise young again Harrison Ford made the character who he is since he played him so many times and just straight embodied the character but Affleck besides being the bomb in Phantoms yo was a great choice and kicked *** in his own way holding his own in the same frame space as Morgan Freeman

Tom Clancy thought that Baldwin was the best. I don't have a link but I believe I heard him say it in an interview. Or, at the very least, he was pissed when Harrison Ford was given the role. I no remember good.

Gosling is a really talented actor, though i don't think he has ever done anything of the likes of Jack Ryan. But you never know he just might make Jack Ryan meaningful again.

I think Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, and Ben Affleck all did an admirable job in their respective movies. However, I do think that Ryan Gosling is one of the best young actors of his generation. I completely lose myself in his character when he's in a movie. Unlike, say, Tom Cruise as Tom Cruise in Valkyrie. He always plays the same character. And, he is always just TC in every role. Gosling, on the other hand, actually knows how to act. So, I think he'll make an excellent Jack Ryan.
