The Hurt Locker was pretty good. But I'm not quite understanding all the hype and accolades at the moment?

The Hurt Locker was terrific, but I can think of at least five or six that were better this year.

I'm pretty happy with all of this. Hurt Locker was a great film and it was mostly due to the direction and the central performance. I even like the choice of Mo'Nique for supporting actress even though Precious is a terrible and overrated movie. I did not see Bright Star but I think that Schneider is criminally underrated. He's one of the best actors around. Anything that raises his profile is fine by me.

And again we have an awards event where no science fiction film has been awarded. These awards are WRONG!!!! WRONG!!!!! I doubt they even count votes for any sci-fi films. Bias/discrimination makes me so ANGRY!!!!!!! GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

Everyone that voted was greater than or equal to 60 probably... GRRRRRRRR They saw 4 World Class sci-fi films and immediately dismissed them... I am going to go outside and drop f-bombs because of these idiots - many of which obviously are close to their social security expiration date... And maybe "good" movie is something that is inconceivable to their paradigm of film-making.

Not to insult Hurt Locker but I am sorry to say that I saw 2 sci-fi films that I can definitely say were better this year...... (District 9, Avatar)

Awards Douche-Bags!

Josh - thanks for your continued support!

To Everyone: Hurt Locker is an EXCELLENT FILM!!! I definitely can say I did not hate it when I saw it but I thought that a better job was done with a couple of things in both Avatar and in District 9:

1. Character Development
2. Effects
3. Action sequences
4. Emotional impact

This movie should still be in contention for awards but my critical eye sees sci-fi as winning big this year - sorry if you hate me for it - but at the end of the day we can all agree that each of these movies is well made and all of these people worked damn hard.

I do feel a little let down when I don't see sci-fi winning any awards after the type of year it has had though...

In being fair and honest, if ten films all have four stars based on what the critics think then it comes down to a personal preference - something that can be heavily influenced by your age (old people seem to hate sci-fi) by what you have been actively involved with, what you support and produce, and by what inspires you and what your person is most susceptible to being inspired by... Crazy world out there...

Agree completely.

I'd go Avatar, I loved it.

The Hurt Locker was gritty and I enjoyed it but I think it's out of it's league big time. To compare it to Avatar, District 9, Star Trek, Watchmen and Inglorious Basterds is a big stretch.

Oh well, I guess in the end the box office is where it counts.

As fun as D-9 is and as much as I believe that its better than the backlash its taken of late...The Hurt Locker is a better movie, and that is a fact. You have a much better argument sticking to Avatar. Bigelow is the ****..."Surfing's the source man... swear to God"

D-9 was a better movie than Avatar, but the Hurt Locker was better than Avatar and D-9. All Avatar did was connect on an entertainment level, D-9 connected on an entertainment level and an emotional one. But, Hurt Locker did what D-9 did even better.

The Hurt Locker was an incredible film. It was, without a doubt, my favorite film of 2009.

Did The Hurt Locker have a guy on his back emptying a clip into the air while yelling "aaaaa"? :)

Nah, I think that was 'Point Break'.

Mo'nique's going tight for best supporting actress.

I loved Hurt Locker and Avatar, if either of these wins best picture oscar, I'll be happy. Jeremy Renner, hands down, best actor of the year with hurt locker. the guy from basterds, best supporting actor.

The Hurt Locker was an awesome film. I am glad to see that Kathryn Bigelow won the best director award. She has shown consistent growth with each film she directs from Near Dark, Point Break, Strange Days, K-19 The Widow-Maker, and The Hurt Locker. I also find it ironic that she was given her start due largely in part to James Cameron, whom she was married to; and now there is this "competition" between Avatar and The Hurt Locker.

I went back to see the Hurt Locker again last week thinking I must have dosed off or something after seeing it during it's original release in the summer and had missed something. I initially thought it was a really good film, but it didn't blow my socks off or leave me feeling I had seen a Best Picture contender. After viewing 2, I left with pretty much the same impression. A really good film, above average, but not the astounding film I hear people talk about as a near transformative film experience. I agree with the previous commenter who says it's strengths lie primarily in Bigelow's direction and in the performances. I'll give it this much, it's the first truly successful film about the Iraq war, all the others have been too earnest, preachy and clumsily executed.

I preferred D9, but would put Inglorious Basterds and Up in the Air above D9 and while I think Cameron has achieved something historic and amazingly entertaining in Avatar I would say it barely scrapes into my top 10.
