Obsessed with money, he follows the advice of a colleague and gambles everything he has on a trade. The "sure thing" turns sour and Daniel loses his job, his money, his reputation, even his wife. He turns to his best friend for help but unexpectedly loses him to a tragic incident. Lost and hopeless, Daniel wanders the chaotic streets of Sao Paulo, just another one of its 17 million inhabitants. A chance meeting with Thomas, one of his father's closest friends, rescues Daniel from his despair. At first Thomas is hesitant to befriend him but with the help of Thomas's beautiful daughter Monica, Daniel is able to gain his trust. Slowly Thomas lets down his defenses and begins to share stories of Daniel's deceased father Alvaro. Daniel learns that his father was an avid filmmaker and was in the process of shooting a documentary on the immigrants of Sao Paulo when he died. However, the most shocking discovery is that his death was not as a result of a heart attack, as Daniel had believed all his life, but rather a deliberate act by a man trying to protect his family and friends. Both Alvaro and Thomas had been members of the opposition party during the military dictatorship in Brazil. Sadly, only one survived to tell his story. His entire life, Daniel has been inexplicably plagued by nightmares of his father. Now this revelation provides him the key to understanding his father's life and the nightmares stop. Rejuvenated, Daniel decides to finish the documentary his father had started. In the process, he finds love, inspiration, and new meaning in life. [More]

Reviews for I Hate Sao Paulo
Using a first-rate cast and script, combined with jump cuts and vivid shots of Sao Paulo, Barros delivers a thought-provoking message about the high price of materialism and political dissent.
Dardo Barros gains points for sincerity and good intentions, even if his intimate drama never quite reaches its potential.
