This English version of the story of Captain Ignatoff stars Laurence Olivier as the dashing Russian officer wounded in World War I. When he awakes in the hospital, his first vision is of the angelic Red Cross nurse, Natasha (Penelope Dudley-Ward). The wounded soldier in love with the beautiful nurse was a cliché even before Hemingway milked the life out of it, but here it is well placed within a complex story of the social and economic obstacles that the lovers must face. Natasha has been persuaded by her aristocratic, but now impoverished parents, to become engaged to Brioukov (Harry Baur), a middle-aged contractor who's grown rich on war related contracts. Although Natasha loves Ignatoff, she honors her engagement to Brioukov. In a twist borrowed from Dostoyevsky, Ignatoff begins to gamble and is soon so deeply in debt that he is forced to accept help from Madame Sabline, a woman of mystery who is soon arrested as a German spy.
