Critic Review - Chicago Sun-Times

The characters are manic and idiotic, the dialogue is rat-a-tat chatter, the action is entirely at the service of the 3-D, and the movie depends on bright colors, lots of noise and a few songs in between the whiplash moments.

The characters have always been manic and idiotic BUT that's what made them so loveable in the first place? If they weren't the way they were they wouldn't have gone on ANY of their crazy, wild adventures?

I think what Ebert's saying is that they are idiotic without motivation. They go too over the top just to service the plot.

In Your Dreams

This is a misnomer. The characters have NOT always been manic and idiotic. Everyone had very clear motivations in the first film, and only one or two of the characters behaved erratically in tune with their personalities. Obvious studio plant is obvious.

They WERE lovable because of how manic and idiotic they are. Now it's just plain annoying.
