We Got This Covered

There have been far worse children's films than Ice Age: Continental Drift, even this year, but few that make me so depressed about Hollywood's utter contempt for young moviegoers.

This is simply the case of a series that has fully run its course without anywhere left to go.

[Teaches] the children of the world all the clichés that they will rapidly come to despise over the course of the following decades.

Pious as well as unimaginative, Continental Drift sets out to teach kids lessons about not trying too hard to get in with the cool crowd.

Trespass

Nothing more than a paint-by-numbers, cast-fuelled continuation of an uninspiring animated series.

Not to beat a dead woolly mammoth here or anything, but the Ice Age movies are all pretty much interchangeable.

What Culture

The wit and charm of the series' earlier entries, and much of their visual splendour, appears to have evaporated.

The plot ... just gets a little repetitious after a while, however goofy, accident-prone but genuinely good natured the characters are.

It doesn't help that Manny, Diego and Sid are among the most boring characters to lead a franchise in recent times.

I hate to be the one to break it to everyone... but it's time these animals were put to sleep.

Continental Drift feels less like an extension of a theatrical franchise than an episode of a middling TV cartoon, lolling around on territory that's already been settled.

Apparently Fox are making a fifth, and people wonder what's pushing originality out of Hollywood.

The characters are manic and idiotic, the dialogue is rat-a-tat chatter, the action is entirely at the service of the 3-D, and the movie depends on bright colors, lots of noise and a few songs in between the whiplash moments.

The nothing-special Ice Age: Continental Drift is the library paste of movies -- smooth and flavorless, kids eagerly consume it despite its total lack of nutritional value.

At the rate things devolving, we can expect Ice Age 10 to be little more than a feature-length flip book.

The movie may not a Jurassic classic, but as a respite from those dry-as-a-dinosaur-bone days of summer, this family entertainment isn't all that beastly.
