Born and raised as a city woman, Mary Elizabeth has some adjusting to do when she and her husband settle down in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where tempers flare and Preacher William Thompson becomes responsible for keeping the peace. Thompson himself becomes the subject of ire when he takes the child of a local atheist on a picnic, but Mary and William's greatest challenge arises when the entire community is beset by an epidemic. Director Henry King brought vast experience with religious subject matters to the table from his work on DAVID AND BATHSHEBA and THE SONG OF BERNADETTE, and it shows--what might have been a hoaky, trite production becomes an entertaining examination of the trials of an itinerant preacher. Star Hayward narrates the tale and, as always, is a joy to watch. [More]
