Will an American comedy ever accidentally be funny?

I know it's unlikely. Americans tell jokes every day in their ordinary lives, much more often than they make comedy films, and they've almost certainly never been funny. But I think of it like this: Being funny is just a certain combination of words said in the right way at the right moment. A machine that generated random strings of words would eventually happen to churn out a mildly funny phrase or sentence purely by accident.

The unfunniness of this film didn't inspire this particular question. Rather, it was its relation to Horrible Bosses that inspired it. You see, I've heard Americans claim that HB was funny. Now, obviously it wasn't. It was boring obvious comedy with an extra dose of unfunny slapstick and face-pulling that only Americans like. The key point to be drawn from Americans liking that film, though, is this: If their instinct for what's funny is so off the mark that they in their generality consider shit like Horrible Bosses and Bridesmaids to be amusing and witty, is it even logically conceivable that such a deranged and stunted mind could ever produce a funny idea even by pure luck?

This question I pose to you.

Man, comedy elitists and smug limeys sure like to hate on Horrible Bosses for being hilarious. Tell me, are you more upset you didn't come up with the idea first or simply furious you couldn't do any better? Wish you were as funny as Charlie Day but will always be resigned to comedy on message boards instead? Take some PRIDE in your trolling. You discredit yourself when you rag on beloved, financially successful and objectively quality titles like HB. Stick to your strengths, smokey-- short paragraphs filled with circular opinionated logic, making children you can't feed and collecting that welfare check every month.

How can you even see the movie through that huge smug cloud? I'm probably being trolled here, but in the event that you are honestly this concerned over the state of comedy in America, my advice would be this: Get over yourself.

Personally, I've stopped considering comedies to even be movies. I mean, some of them would be ok if they were 5-10 minute sketches, but pretty much every comedy (esp. recently) that I've seen is one or two jokes way overstretched...it's completely unworth seeing in a movie theater.

Horrible Bosses was very weak, sloppily edited, off the mark on a lot of laughs. There was potential, but most of it lost.

Another huge misfire was "Extract" by Mike Judge, with once again, Jason Bateman.

The great comedies for my generation came in the 80s and early 90s. Seemed like they actually tried back then.

Being condescending isn't the same as being clever. I could jump to the conclusion that all your countrymen (I'm assuming British?) are as obnoxious and and narcissistic as you are, but that would be incredibly ignorant and lazy of me to make those kinds of generalizations.

Oh I understand ethnicity just fine-- but you don't. Perhaps if you had ever actually been to England and weren't just some redneck jethro cynically posing as a black man online you'd know that there are quite a few English, African American males living and working abroad. But that didn't factor into your saturday morning cartoon, couch-potato perception of geography did it?

So, is just American movies or Americans that you think can't make a good comedy or know what is good comedy? Are they making wildly funny movies all over the world except the US? I didn't think Horrible Bosses was great but I did like Bridemaids. The original Hangover was great. Certainly there have been good comedies made in the past like Dumb and Dumber, Coming to America, Trading Places..too many to list. Its tough to make movie that is a comedy and hold it down the whole movie...its starts to fade as the it tries to tie everything in the end. But, many, many good and great movies are very funny that aren't considered comedies....movies like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, Rain Man etc....they are dramas but funny. Silver Linings Playbook is a drama but alot of humorous moments. I probably won't go see Identity Thief, will wait for DVD but there is a place for these type of movies, not everything can be an Oscar worthy movie. Sometimes and I don't want to go see Zero Dark Thirty (which I liked very much) but not always in the mood to see that type of movie.

you make the claim that Americans can't make a funny movie. now, that's your opinion man. what you find funny, may not be funny to someone else. it's a social way of being exposed to certain types of comedy. after a while, you may dial yourself into one you really like the most. not only are you being completely bias in believing ALL Americans find THIS particular film funny, or any of our "shit". but you sound like a complete moron. who are you to tell anyone else what comedy should or should not be? I haven't seen this film yet, though I may. I know what to expect, it's not going to be anything groundbreaking. But I am almost positive it will be entertaining because of Bateman. If this question you bring up is such a big deal, you seemed to have answered it yourself. you don't like American comedy. we can leave it at that. you can leave now, and watch whatever you find funny.

I'm American and I found Horrible Bosses to be exceptionally bland.

Then again, I've seen enough programming from the UK to find that most English comedy is terrible too. Most art is simply not good, Hollywood marketing machine or otherwise.

That's a pretty uninformed comment. British humour is paramount (to me). Dry wit trumps slapstick every time IMO. If it's so unfunny why did the Office get acclaim 'the world over' and picked up in the U.S and currently being milked for all it's worth?

Not sure what you meant by that. The UK Office was a hit by any ones standards and the decision to cut it at 3 seasons was wise, like Gervais' Extras. The recipe was then taken and changed to suit the demographics or humour of the country.
The Office was the first British comedy to win a Golden Globe, quite a feat given the type of comedy created in the US.
I don't rate the US General Public's tastes very highly if Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks/Undeclared, Party Down lived short lives. Maybe it's solely down to level of advertising, as Two and a Half men is *still* going.
