This is a somber work -- Ceylan's movies have drawn comparisons to Antonioni for their probing of alienation and to Bresson for their unadorned style. But Ceylan has his moments of sly humor.

Reviews for Climates
As a study of male weakness, Climates hits at the bone but its formal beauty and dry humour help soften the blow.
The carefully composed exteriors are the only clue to the roiling emotions underneath.
The pitch-perfect direction and the crisp but lonely images create an uncomfortable and awkward intimacy...
Has occasional moments of quiet beauty but is just as often frustratingly inert.
Dress warm for this chilly dissection of the irreconcilable gulf between men and women. Acutely observed, artfully executed, and grimly funny.
[The] main character spends an inordinate amount of time brooding and staring off into the distance, alternating with scenes of that character's girlfriend brooding and staring off into the distance.
The work of a film-maker who has established absolute mastery over his cinematic idiom.
A masterpiece of craftsmanship that fails completely on the thematic front.
Caylan's utter minimalism leaves one with the feeling, mostly, of frosty dispassion.
A moody and sobering portrait of the end of a romantic relationship between an older man and a younger woman.
A slow, deliberate and often achingly beautiful film about how we often keep at arm’s length that which we most love.
anyone who has known what it's like to feel regret and loneliness wrap around you like a scarf will no doubt feel a kindred spirit at work
Finds magnificence in the everyday and doesn’t allow one single word or action to stray from a complete vision of what it means to be living and loving today in [director Nuri Bilge] Ceylan’s home city of Istanbul.
[Director Ceylan] has created a plaintive work of art in Climates, the story of a mature relationship edging from the stale doldrums of summer to a winter of discontent.
It's minimalist cinema that turns on subtle emotion rather than narrative and demands the audience's full attention.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan's film paints a haunting portrait of existential solitude, one in which the images speak louder and often more forcefully than do any of the words.
The obvious, meticulous deliberation with which Ceylan has framed his images and timed his edits does not conceal the banality of what he produces.
Ceylan's understated central performance is no flattering self-portrait: his Isa has a wry charm, but he's also a self-pitying and patronizing individual with a cruel streak.
