It's a little strange watching a guy from Detroit dance around a modern apartment with his face painted, doing West African drug and healing rituals. But then how weird is it spending your life shooting junk into your veins?
The film, though, might have been more powerful with a little less grit.
This highly personal look at the controversial addiction-ending drug Ibogaine often veers into self-indulgence before becoming an interesting ethno-documentary at the end. But its lack of journalistic objectivity hinders real understanding of the subject.
I'm Dangerous with Love isn't particularly compelling or trustworthy as a character portrait.
A powerful, unflinchingly honest and intense experience that captivates you on a visceral level.
