A cinematic homage to one of the greatest NBA basketball players ever, MICHAEL JORDAN TO THE MAX is a loving documentary that focuses on the last season the world-class Chicago Bulls player took part in before hanging up his sneakers. Directors James Stern and Don Kempf originally presented this concise celebration in IMAX format, but watching Jordan's signature jumps and plays is just as compelling on video and DVD. Jordan himself is famous not just for being a great player, but for his admirable work ethic and, in this day of utterly shameless behavior among professional athletes, is a man who takes his position as role model to the young very seriously. Narrated by Laurence Fishburne, the film explores Jordan's various moments of athletic genius, showing highlights of several tense games in which Jordan saved his team from defeat. The film also uses footage of Jordan's appearances in TV commercials, and in various interviews, which illustrate his unique personal dedication to sports, and to kids. This is not an in-depth biography, but rather an entertaining and highly inspirational portrait of a great athlete. [More]

What's the difference between documentary and hagiography? Directors James Stern and Don Kempf don't seem to have given the matter much thought.

An honorific but unmoving portrait of the Chicago Bulls’ No. 23.

Unlike Michael Jordan, this large-format movie demonstrates mostly unrealized potential.

Michael Jordan is one of the few athletes big enough to deserve a film such as “Michael Jordan to the Max.”

Jordan was born to be an admired all-star. But as the film so eloquently shows, he worked hard to be the classy superstar that he turned out to be.

I was mesmerized by the awesome heroics Jordan displayed and seeing them on the giant IMAX screen gave me chills.

IMAX is a format where the sheer scale overpowers its flaws.

The filmmakers give us what we always want when it comes to MJ: images of a man caught in the act of being superhuman.

Michael Jordan, sports icon, gets another buffing. Michael Jordan, person, remains private and just a little bit richer.

Michael to the Max is, aside from the IMAX process, the kind of routine documentary a local TV station might air on a Sunday afternoon when a ballgame is rained out.

Essentially just a promotional film for Jordan as a product. It plays like a commercial for itself.
