Though never boring, Impostor is downright depressing because it's so easy to catch glimpses of the knockout film that lies buried underneath Fleder's mangled direction.

Sinise stars as Spencer Olham, a weapons expert in 2079 who wakes up one morning to find himself accused of being an alien. He sets out on the run, being hunted down by Major Hathaway (Vincent D'Onofrio). He receives help from an underground leader (Mekhi Pipher), and upon returning to the city, he must convince his wife, Maya (Madeleine Stowe), and his best friend, Nelson (Tony Shalhoub), that he is indeed her husband and not some kind of robot monster with a bomb in his chest. With IMPOSTOR, director Gary Fleder (DON'T SAY A WORD) has crafted an edgy, fast-paced film that contains elements of Alfred Hitchcock's THE WRONG MAN, Ridley Scott's BLADE RUNNER (also based on a Dick story), Andrew Davis's THE FUGITIVE, and Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP. Sinise gets to flex his muscles as he continually escapes from Hathaway and a torture device that Goldfinger would be proud of, the Vivisector. The futuristic, fascistic world created by production designer Nelson Coates and shot beautifully by cinematographer Robert Elswit is the perfect setting for this ultimate battle of man against machine, the individual against the state, love and humanity against order and militarism. Reviews for Impostor
A yawn for the most part, depending on dull characters and uninvolving twists.
Impostor doesn't do much with its template, despite a remarkably strong cast.
The film's few ideas are stretched to the point of evaporation; the whole central section is one big chase that seems to have no goal and no urgency. It's just filler.
Impostor has a handful of thrilling moments and a couple of good performances, but the movie doesn't quite fly. For starters, the story is just too slim.
Impostor is really little more than an extended Outer Limits episode.
Looks like a nifty little sci-fi film noir but is actually a noisy mess.
You will spend an hour and a half feeling adequately entertained if you're a sucker for sci-fi-run-run-run flicks.
There is so much action that there is hardly any room to explore the story's social and psychological themes, let alone some half-baked delusions.
Hope keeps arising that the movie will live up to the apparent skills of its makers and the talents of its actors, but it doesn't.
Impostor can't think of a thing to do with these characters except have them run through dark tunnels, fight off various anonymous attackers, and evade elaborate surveillance technologies.
A cheesy sci-fi flick...not significantly better than direct-to-video fare.
That this dud futuristic thriller even purports to be based on a story by famed science-fiction author Philip K. Dick is an insult to his estimable legacy.
Tells (the story) with such atmospheric ballast that shrugging off the plot's persnickety problems is simply a matter of (being) in a shrugging mood.
