Set in Barcelona, the ensemble cast of thirtysomethings plays out an intricate dance of romance, friendship, intimacy, and lies. The dialogue carries the action, with most of the exposition taking place offscreen, highlighting the ways that people manage to discuss a great deal, but fail to connect. All of the friends harbor secrets, including a housewife with lesbian feelings for her good friend, a single woman addicted to a fantasy of romance, and a man having an affair with a student. Things come to a head when the group comes together for a meal; emotions finally become too much for each to contain. This subtle film features an exquisite script, and is beautifully lit and photographed; it is carried, however, by the performances of the actors, each of whom creates a nuanced, fully human character who will not fail to surprise and refresh. Wants to be a subtle, penetrating look at a group of 30-somethings and the lies they tell one another. Sometimes it achieves that aim. And sometimes 'more mature' just means 'duller.' Full Review |

for the most part In the City leaves its characters just as we found them Full Review |

The focus is squarely on the people, not any plot mechanics, and the result is a deeply internalised drama about the unspoken awkwardness in all relationships. Full Review |

So blandly targeted at the upper-middle class urbanite that it always fails to excite. It might be upscale, but it's a bit stale. Full Review |
