IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL: THE MYSTERIOUS ART AND LIFE OF HENRY DARGER explores the fascinating mind of a reclusive, obsessive man who spent much of his life working on a 15,000-page illustrated book about the ultimate battle of good versus evil, focusing on young girls in serious danger. Born and raised in and around Chicago, Henry Darger was a lonely, strange child who had no friends and an ailing father. Sent to the Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children, Darger was different from the other kids. In 1909, when he was seventeen, he began compiling "The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion," a massive undertaking about a fierce war that involved Christian soldiers, heathens, and the seven pretty Vivian Girls. Jessica Yu's documentary draws remarkable parallels between Darger's fantasy world and his real life, based on material discovered in his apartment after his death in 1973. She also speaks with Darger's landlord and the few neighbors and churchgoers who knew him, opting not to talk to art critics or psychiatrists, instead letting the audience choose for itself whether Darger was a madman or a genius. She also brings Darger's colorful collage art to life, using old-fashioned animation techniques. The compelling film is narrated by Dakota Fanning, with passages from Darger's writings read by Larry Pine. [More]

The best thing about In the Realms of the Unreal are the sequences in which Darger's drawings, of epic battles and pigtailed heroines, are gently animated -- the pictures brought to life with subtle, fluttering motion.

Yu's decision to bypass the literature about Darger is unfortunate, because it contains so many fascinating details about his source materials, methods, creative problems, and aesthetic development.

Henry Darger's mind may have been a tough place to live, but In the Realms of the Unreal makes for a stirring visit.

This is a film every bit as poetic, textured and intriguing as Darger's own rapturous visions.

The path taken by the film is somewhat labyrinthine and obscure, but it offers enough rewards to counterbalance its frustrations.

A film that strives mightily to make an interesting subject out of a pathetic and possibly dangerous figure.

The movie's central gimmick, animating the novel's illustrations while actors like Larry Pine and Dakota Fanning read the text dramatically in voiceover, grows cumulatively irritating and alienating.

While Yu has made a sensitive and intriguing introduction to Darger and his world, she could have gone further without the film becoming overwhelmed by the magnitude of his unsettling isolation and oeuvre.

The best way for a film to acknowledge the specialness of painting is to get out of its way and present it unaltered, whereas Yu uses it as raw material to be moved around, sometimes so crudely as to resemble the credits for Monty Python's Flying Circus.

If In the Realms of the Unreal does indeed make the leap from fest circuit to arthouse exhibition, defenders and detractors doubtless will produce reams of contentious reviews and essays.

Using Darger's own drawings (some of them animated by the filmmakers) and words, as well as interviews with the few people who came in contact with him, Yu presents a compelling, somewhat disturbing portrait of the artist.

Darger is one of the world's best-known outsider artists, but the fact that no one interviewed in In the Realms of the Unreal, Jessica Yu's excellent new documentary on his life and work, can agree on how to pronounce his name speaks volumes.
