Jim Broadbent Talks Harry Potter, Indy 4
From whips to wands.

For most actors, landing a role in just one of the most successful movie franchises in history would be a dream come true -- but for Jim Broadbent, it wouldn't even tell half the story.

Broadbent, whose decades in TV and film have included appearances in Brazil, Moulin Rouge, and the Bridget Jones movies, has entered the Land of Highly Anticipated Blockbuster Sequels -- not only is he currently filming a role in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but it's just been announced that he will be joining the cast of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Dark Horizons was lucky enough to get an interview with Broadbent, and in an excerpt posted yesterday, he shed a little light on both productions.

First, the details on Broadbent's participation in Indy 4, which he finishes next month:

I'm Indiana's academic colleague at Yale. I'm his friend and colleague -- there's a couple of my scenes to go.

The actor also shares a tidbit or two regarding his Harry Potter role:

He's called Horace Slughorn. He's a retired teacher of magic who's drawn back out of retirement because he's got some secrets they need in the battle against the Deatheaters and he's quite star struck as a teacher and he's drawn back into the fold because he likes to notch up celebrity students, and he's drawn back by Harry.

I love Jim Broadbent's work, but he just doesn't seem to fit Slughorn. Oh well, I'm sure they'll make it work as they do with most of the cast.

You have to think as well the make-up department is probably going to help him out there. I didn't originally see Emma Thompson as Trelawney either, but the combination of the make-up and her performance really nailed it.

and you also have to find someone who's not going to get acted off the screen...a tougher task than you'd think with Rickman, Smith, Fiennes and Bonham Carter just to name a few already in the cast. I'm really looking forward to the next one because I think it will really be Rickmans time to shine. Honestly no one else is ever going to be able to play Snape.

These last two HP flicks should actually be pretty freakin' good. The stories are definitely there, hope the film crews can deliver.

Broadbent is a great choice.

I agree with you, bigbrother, no one else is going to be able to play Snape like Alan Rickman has. Can't wait to see him shine in HBP.

I love Broadbent. A brilliant actor and a great choice for Slughorn.

Does anyone here read The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher? I really think that Broadbent would be perfectly cast as Ebenezer McCoy.
