Inglourious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino's unique take on the Second World War, blasts into cinemas on Friday. Following our interview with the maverick director last week, RT sat down for exclusive chats with Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, Til Schweiger, Daniel Brühl and Michael Fassbender to learn more about their characters and the Tarantino experience, with additional comments from the director himself. Join us as we discover Tarantino's original plans to play Pitt's character himself, Diane Kruger's desire to record a song in character and how Eli Roth came to replace Adam Sandler.

Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt)

Inglourious Basterds

Brad Pitt:
Inglourious BasterdsI did True Romance, which he wrote, and we were in each other's periphery from time to time. I was told he had this thing that he'd been writing for eight years, and he originally wrote the part for himself. Somewhere along the way he decided that I would make sense in it, and he put it my way. [laughs] I always had a feeling we'd work together!

So he came out to see me and we cracked open a bottle of wine -- because I was in the south of France -- and had a laugh and talked about film from A to Z, as you enjoy doing with him. I'm not sure how much of the movie we got through that night, but it's one of the best scripts I've read.

Quentin Tarantino:
Inglourious BasterdsBrad Pitt and I wanted to work together for a long time and this was just the right time, completely. I didn't really consider anybody else -- he was one of the first people to read the script. After I finished it, two days later I sent him a copy. And it was cool, because he was waiting for it.

Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz)

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin Tarantino:
Inglourious BasterdsIf I hadn't have found the right Col. Landa I would have pulled the plug on the movie. I just wouldn't have made the movie, because Landa's a linguistic genius.

Christoph Waltz:
Inglourious BasterdsI walked into the audition and we did a reading together. No cameras, no pressure, we were just playing, and Quentin's so great at making you feel at ease, because that really is the basis. You need to feel safe, and then things can develop. We started playing, like two kids in a room, and we went through the whole script. That was there the ball started rolling.

After I walked out of the first session, I said to the casting agent in Berlin, 'Look, if that's it, it will have been more than just worthwhile. Thank you!' And when Quentin called me back for a second audition, I said, 'I feel exactly the same, only now it's 200 per cent better.' And a few days later I got the call.

The real genius of this film was truly in the casting. And every scene drips of nuance and tension, and hilarity! This film was for Christoph Waltz to steal, and he did not disappoint. It's almost unconscionable to read that Waltz actually had callbacks...because I cannot imagine another actor alive who could've played his part better.

Excellent read RT...nicely done.

Woot, Daniel Bruhl...he is the reason I want to see this movie. He is so talented and I wish his movies are more accessible here in the States.

Another funky and spontaneous movie from Quentin Tarantino. Another very concise dialogue from the actors involved with this film.

I'm looking forward to seeing this film. It looks like the cast had a really good time filming it.

There aren't many people I can say are cool. Most are average, or boring, or crazy. Brad Pitt, is COOL! And his character just adds to his general bada$s-ery. In fact, this movie just might be too much awesome to handle!

Brad Pitt seems like the kind of guy I SHOULD hate because he's more successful than I am, but he's cool and down-to-earth. And he's actually a good actor. Not a lot of movie stars are like that.

Very good casting, indeed. I am kind of curious to see how Eli Roth does. He's never in his own movies long enough to leave an impression. I just hope he's a slightly better actor than he is a director.

Looks gay - I'll check it out anyway and hope it's better than Deathproof. I'm still a Quentin fan.

Out of all the massive talent in this movie, you're only reason to see this is for Daniel Brühl, a man with the least amount of talent in this movie? I guess the casting helped bring everybody to see this movie.

PS: BigEarn is a ***:)

George Sanders is wrong. He shoulda had one of them take inspiration from a latter-day pissed up Oliver Reed. Now that woulda bin entertaining.

I'm not sure about Eli Roth as an actor at all, let alone a big part in this movie, Even his small part in Deathproof is crap, I don't know what he's going to make with this bigger role

Daniel Bruhl doesn't get a lot of roles in American films; the last one I saw him in is in a bit role for Bourne Ultimatum. He was great in Good-bye Lenin! and The Edukators, and I still need to see Salvador, which he received a Goya nomination for. So forgive me for not wanting to see this movie because of Brad Pitt, who is quite mainstream.

I'm an oldhead:
Brad Pitt looks like Franco Nero and Christoph Waltz looks like Thomas Milian in a Sergio Corbucci western.

Brad Pitt also looks a lot like Warren Oats in The Wild Bunch, Race With the Devil and Blue Thunder.

I love nostaliga

Good news: George Hamilton is starring in Love At Second Bite. I think I'll re-watch Love At First Bite tonight, maybe.

Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Robert Downey Jr., Johnny Depp, and George Clooney are probably the best actors in Hollywood right now. Dachshund (Doucheshund) why do you dislike Pitt? Is it because he owns on Angelina everynight? Trust us, we hate him for that, but he's a cool guy.
