Pollack does a steady job of unraveling the somewhat complicated plot, bringing the events to a slow boil and keeping you captive even when the movie gets a bit too talky.

Crafted from the same mould that saw Pollack produce the superlative political thriller THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (1975), Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn star in a film riddled with subterfuge, recriminations, and deadly secrets. Kidman plays Silvia Broome, an interpreter who works at the UN in New York City. One night, while collecting a bag she has left behind in the building, Silvia overhears a whispered conversation in which an assassination attempt on a redoubtable African leader, named Zuwanie (Earl Cameron), is planned during his future visit to the UN. Secret service agent Tobin Keller (Penn) is assigned to provide security for Zuwanie on the forthcoming trip, and conducts an investigation when Silvia explains what she has heard. He quickly discovers that Silvia has a lengthy, troubled past as a citizen from the same country as Zuwanie, and immediately doubts her story. A series of frantic, fast-paced set pieces ensue, with Pollack beautifully capturing the architectural wonder of the UN, and staging some breathtaking scenes all over the city. Much has been made of THE INTERPRETER'S status as the first film to be shot inside the UN, and it's to Pollack's credit that he wasn't overawed by such a prospect. Making full use of the building, the director highlights the hustle and bustle of a typical day at the UN, while also shooting eerily silent late night scenes among the famous halls and corridors. As Pollack piles on the tension, Penn and Kidman deliver exemplary performances alongside a prodigious supporting cast, who do justice to an intelligently written plot designed to keep viewers guessing right up until the final moments of the film. Reviews for The Interpreter
Conventionally described as a political thriller, but The Interpreter is as apolitical as it is unthrilling.
Una digna obra, con un suspenso magistralmente llevado, que se gana por completo la recomendación pero que no llega a ser tan buena como prometía.
Pollack, has confused subtle with muddled and so the film inhabits [a] middle ground between complex and convoluted.
I was steadily absorbed by The Interpreter, even though much of the plot didn’t make a great deal of sense.
...anyone looking for a believable plot will have to...scour the multiplex for something more realistic, like, say, Sin City or The Amityville Horror...
A tale that is so complex and far-fetched that it's impossible to swallow.
Helmer Sydney Pollack, invoking his CIA thriller Three Days of the Condor, deftly builds tension, particularly during climactic action sequences.
Such, unfortunately, is the pitfall for thrillers that aim to be more literate and grownup than the usual fare: they sometimes forget to thrill.
Its high-mindedness has obscured the thriller's basic function -- to deliver thrills.
A gripping and intelligent political thriller that, unusually for these troubled times, promotes articulation of the jawbone over kneejerk reflex.
No doubt there have been more intriguing tales played out in its halls than the passable whodunit the movie provides, but this one does have its moments
Like certain prescriptions, The Interpreter can cause drowsiness and should not be viewed while operating heavy machinery.
A classy, complicated and thought-provoking affair that, if even a bit too long, pulls you along courtesy of its venerated cast and crew.
Both a nostalgic tribute to the nail-biting big-picture mind-benders of days past and a perfectly engaging piece of entertainment.
The Interpreter is a smartly mounted thriller that seizes the moment it hits the screen, and takes the audience for quite a sharp, taut ride.
Succeeds because it focuses on a lost art of cinema: Character development.
