A remake of the French film LES CHOSES DE LA VIE, INTERSECTION places Vincent Eastman (Richard Gere), a successful architect, between his indifferent, beautiful, aristocratic wife, Sally (Sharon Stone), and his free-spirited lover, Olivia (Lolita Davidovich). Although it seems that Vincent has made a decision to leave Sally for Olivia, he remains emotionally torn, especially when he wonders how a divorce might affect his 12-year-old daughter, Meaghan (Jenny Morrison), with whom he is very close. If Vincent doesn't make a decision soon, he might find himself at a crossroads where he will be forced to make a choice and suffer the cataclysmic consequences. Using flashbacks and, in one climactic scene, beautifully eerie slow-motion camerawork, director Mark Rydell's INTERSECTION brings back the heartwrenching feeling and intricacies of old Hollywood melodramas. Less neurotic and sexually charged than usual, Gere digs deep to find the source of his character's chronic indecisiveness.

Only Stone manages to find any emotional depth in her character, and that's not enough reason to see the film.

It's a waxen, pretentious bore, and whatever chance it may have had of succeeding is foiled by casting so misguided that it's hard to imagine it wasn't meant as a vicious joke.

Looks nice, gives the sense that there’s supposed to be something important going on here, but doesn’t deliver the goods.

Gere and Stone are fine with roles that do not overly tax their range, particularly in genre films, such as thrillers or mysteries. But these characters call for wide-ranging emotion.

The concept sounds reasonable until the characters start reciting some truly dumb dialogue.

Tespite the glossiness, it winds up seeming profoundly uneventful, perhaps because the car crash is the story's only real dramatic turn.

Stone deserves some points for playing a recognizable human being while Davidovich fares less well in an underscripted part, but what sabotages the story altogether is Gere's boundless narcissism.

It also seems as though the filmmakers scored well in Symbolism 101.

Should he as an incredibly wealthy architect go back to his wife, Sharon Stone, or stay with his mistress, Lolita Davidovich? It's a question that ranks up there on the suspense-o-meter with "Paper or plastic?"

The only thing these characters have to talk about are the problems manufactured for them by the screenplay. No other conversations on any other subject amount to more than filler between crises.
