Weekly Ketchup: Ben Kingsley Cast as Iron Man 3 Villain

Plus, new roles for Tina Fey, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie.

This Week's Ketchup includes movies a movie about the making of Mary Poppins, a new take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and new roles for Steve Carell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tina Fey, Harrison Ford, Dwayne Johnson, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

This Week's Top Story

SIR BEN KINGSLEY IS TONY STARK'S NEXT VILLAIN IN IRON MAN 3

Director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) will be starting filming of Iron Man 3 in North Carolina in just five weeks, so it's about time that we start hearing about casting, and this week, we did. Sir Ben Kingsley, recently of Hugo and currently filming Ender's Game, is in final negotiations to play "the villain" in Iron Man 3. The initial release also goes out of its way to specify that Ben Kingsley will not be playing The Mandarin, Iron Man's traditional arch-nemesis whose existence has been teased in previous films. All that is known about who Kingsley will play is that he is somehow involved with nanotechnology. An interesting aspect of the whole Kingsley-isn't-the-Mandarin announcement is that when he wears a goatee or van dyke, Sir Ben Kingsley does in fact bear a resemblance to the way the Mandarin has often been drawn. Another possibility is that this could be a situation similar to the casting of the villain in Batman Begins, where there was some subterfuge surrounding who exactly Liam Neeson and Ken Watanabe were playing. In this case, is it possible that Sir Ben Kingsley is playing a character that doesn't call himself The Mandarin, but basically is, you know... The Mandarin?

Fresh Developments This Week

#1 MR. AND MRS. SMITH MAY REUNITE IN THE COUNSELOR

The Counselor is the name of a movie that has been moving through development at an unusual pace, when one considers that most movies take at least a few years (if not much longer). The Counselor was the first spec script sold by author Cormac McCarthy (The Road, No Country for Old Men) (whose novels are normally sold as existing properties). Then, director Ridley Scott picked The Counselor as his next film after Prometheus and its profile jumped up a little bit higher yet. Along the way, Michael Fassbender signed on to star as a successful attorney who gets involved with the illegal drug business, much to his regret. This week, the profile of The Counselor went even higher as both Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem are now in talks to costar, with Angelina Jolie also discussing taking on a small role. Particularly because of Ridley Scott's involvement (though Pitt and Jolie don't hurt), 20th Century Fox is also now in negotiations to distribute The Counselor, which starts filming in June.

#2 TOM HANKS GOES DISNEY, AS DISNEY, IN SAVING MR. BANKS

Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson have signed on with Walt Disney Pictures to star in Saving Mr. Banks, a film about the making of the classic 1964 Disney musical film Mary Poppins. Tom Hanks will be playing Walt Disney himself, who spent 14 years trying to get Australian author P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson) to sign off on a film inspired by her series of Mary Poppins books. The film will tell the story of Disney's pursuit of the rights, Travers' apprehension about the project, and her eventual dissatisfaction with the final product (particularly the animated sequences). Saving Mr. Banks will be directed by John Lee Hancock (The Rookie, The Blind Side) from a script by Kelly Marcel, creator of the FOX TV series Terra Nova.

#3 LEONARDO DICAPRIO REUNITES WITH THE AUTHOR OF SHUTTER ISLAND FOR LIVE BY NIGHT

Warner Bros has acquired the rights to Live By Night, the latest novel by Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island), as a starring vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, who will also be producing through his Appian Way Productions. Written as a sequel (and the second novel of a trilogy) to his 2008 novel The Given Day, Live By Night brings (some of) the same characters in Boston and Tulsa, Oklahoma from the 1910s of The Given Day into the Prohibition Era of the 1920s. Warner Bros now has the film rights to all three books of the trilogy, including the third book that has yet to be written.

#4 STEVE CARELL TO HAVE A ...TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY

Steve Carell is in talks with 20th Century Fox to star in the studio's live action adaptation of the Judith Viorst children's book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Steve Carell would play Alexander's father Ben in this story about a boy going through a day full of unfortunate incidents. This movie with a very long title I don't want to type or paste again will be directed by Lisa Cholodenko, as her first feature after winning critical success in 2010 with The Kids Are All Right.

#5 TINA FEY TO STAR IN LATEST NANCY MEYERS ROMANTIC COMEDY, THE INTERN

Paramount Pictures has made a deal to finance and distribute The Intern, the latest romantic comedy from writer/director Nancy Meyers (What Women Want, It's Complicated, Something's Gotta Give). In what sounds like a continuation of themes from Meyers' previous films, Tina Fey will play the founder of a fashion e-business who is surprised to find that the "senior" who is recruited to become her intern is actually a man in his 70s. The two eventually develop a friendship and platonic bond (though Meyers still describes it as a love story). Nancy Meyers reportedly already has an idea as to who will play the older man, but isn't revealing the name until deals are underway with that actor.

Rotten Ideas of the Week

#4 A MOVIE BASED ON THE NON-NARRATIVE NEED FOR SPEED VIDEO GAMES?

Electronic Arts has begun development on a movie based upon their popular series of Need for Speed racing video games. EA is getting things started by hiring screenwriter John Gatins (Real Steel, Hardball) to start work on a pitch that will be shopped around to various studios, including Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. Universal Pictures is not expected to be one of the studios talked to since Universal already has the Fast and the Furious franchise. Unlike many intellectual properties, Need for Speed brings with it very few narrative demands since most of the games are mostly basic racing games with very little narrative structure. In that way, Need for Speed is very much like the titles in the recent trend of movies based on board games and toys... and that's why it's one of the week's Rotten Ideas.

#3 DWAYNE JOHNSON TO FIGHT THE MONSTERS OF LORE

Warner Bros is picking up the screen rights to the IDW Publishing comic book series Lore as a sci-fi action movie for Dwayne Johnson to star in. Described as "Men in Black with mythological creatures," Lore is set in a world where a long line of "Shepherds" have protected Earth from various monsters of myth, with a modern woman finding herself in the middle of the creatures' return. Lore was adapted by screenwriters Cory Goodman (Priest) and Jeremy Lott, who doesn't yet have any produced films to his credit. In addition to Warner Bros, Lore is being produced by Mad Chance (Jonah Hex, Cats & Dogs) and Circle of Confusion (TV's The Walking Dead).

#2 GALE FROM THE HUNGER GAMES, HAN SOLO, AND COMMISSIONER GORDON ARE OBSESSED WITH PARANOIA

Director Robert Luketic (21, Legally Blonde) is set to start work this summer on a "corporate espionage thriller" called Paranoia, based on a novel by Joseph Finder. Liam Hemsworth, who recently costarred as Gale in The Hunger Games, is signed to play the lead character as a low level employee who becomes a corporate spy (to avoid going to prison for a crime). Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman are both also in final negotiations to costar. Paranoia is one of the week's Rotten Ideas based mostly on the RT Tomatometer scores for director Robert Luketic, whose filmography also includes Killers, The Ugly Truth and Monster-in-Law.

#1 SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH... AS A SUPERHERO?

Sony Pictures has announced ongoing development of a superhero movie based on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, who got her start in the 1960s as a spin off in Archie Comics. The series about a precocious, well... "teenage witch" has previously been adapted as three different animated TV series and most famously, as a long running live action ABC/WB sitcom starring Melissa Joan Hart. This new superhero take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch will be "an origin story in the vein of Spider-Man, about a young girl coming to terms with her remarkable powers." Probably everything a person needs to know about this project is contained in this sentence from Deadline.com: "While the tone of the movie will be edgier, they are keeping her talking black cat Salem, who here is a transformed prince creating unique love stories for Sabrina." This live action film is being developed concurrently with a new animated series announced in September that was described as "Twilight meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Director Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday) worked on the presentation that sold Sony on the project, but he is not yet signed to direct, depending upon scheduling. Meanwhile, over at Warner Bros, they already have the rights to a very similar character, and she's been around (almost) as long as Sabrina the Teenage Witch... she's called Zatanna.

It's all about "The Counselor"! Just listen, and you can hear DeNiro echoing the sentiments..."come out come out". I think Pitt and Fassbender are both also co-starring in Steve McQueen's Solomon Northup movie, which I think is shooting right now. Add Bardem, McCarthy and Scott and it's just an irresistable pitch.

Not super crazy about anything else. What's the plan with the Lehane books? Are they planning on doing "Given Day" first? I know nothing about the characters or chronology of the storyline. The Disney/Mary Poppins idea doesn't sound bad, until I saw who was writing and directing it. I snoozed off a little after reading the phrase "fashion e-business", but I'm betting Steve Martin's getting that role. And I frankly don't see how Kingsley could be anyone other than Mandarin, and I think this is a rather weak attempt at being coy with the fanboys. That's still better than being outright slutty (Sabrina?) but, you know, beggars can't be choosers, I guess. For the truly desperate, there's always an available "Lore"y Hole. Perfectly anonymous entertainment.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith being added to a story that didn't include them sounds as if an original work is being co-opted.

Well, Gordon, you probably know that 'stars' get movies made in Hollywood (which is why I thank DiCaprio for keeping Scorsese employed), so this is probably a mutual backscratch. We'll see how 'small' Angelina's role is before passing judgement.

00 - Yeah, cool. Kingsley's track record is pitiful even though he's a great actor. Hopefully the fact that he's joining IM3 doesn't mean the movie will be ass.
01 - I'm really excited for this one, I like the author's work, and No Country & Road were both terrific. Hopefully he can deliver an awesome story from an original script.
02 - Meh. Hanks hasn't been impressing me with his newer work, and I have zero love for Disney and especially Poppins, so I'll skip this one.
03 - Sweet, period flicks are awesome, especially those dealing with prohibition (ie Boardwalk Empire), and Leo is one of my favorite actors working today, so this should be good, his recent misstep in Edgar notwithstanding.
04 - Steve Carell + Kids flicks = instant pass.
05 - Pass even faster than the last one.
06 - Yeah, this will be shitty. Very shitty. EA can't even get the fucking games right anymore, what's the chance of a movie being good?
07 - Really not into WWE so I don't get Rock's appeal. He's a goofy looking dude with zero talent, screen presence or charisma. Dude should stick to fake-fighting.
08 - No, I'm sure he'll make this movie good. This will be his breakout film *tired sarcasm.
09 - Fuck it. That's it, I'm done. I don't have the energy to deal with this bullshit.

The Watcher was born in Russia and grew-up in Apartheid South Africa and now lives in Canada . . . no, he probably would not like Disney (or anything "American" for that matter). Russia and South Africa have histories of intolerance; and The United States of America thrives on tolerance (comparatively)---someone in Russia and/or South Africa would say that Americans are snotty-nosed, snooty, spoiled brats and Disney is disgustingly "fluffy" and too indicative of American sentimentality.

Listen, ass-hat, don't go about putting words in my mouth. 1) I did not grow up in apartheid SA, I grew up with Nelson Mandela's presidency. 2) I love America, that's why I fucking live here, idiot. If I didn't, I'd move. 3) USA thrives on tolerance? HAHAHAHA! You must not watch the news or have any clue on what's happening there, either present day or historically after the 70s. But then, I'd expect nothing less from you. The fact that I dislike Disney/most cartoons is not indicative of anything, I just don't like shit aimed at kids. Ghibli, for example, I have no problem with, because you don't have to be 10 to like it, it speaks to everyone, same as most Pixar (which is kinda Disney, but not in the sense that I am referencing).

Apr 15 - 05:53 PM

Gordon Franklin Terry Sr

hey, in reference to Captain America that you hated American-themed Super Hero movies.//America is tolerant: gay marriage, relaxed gun laws, limited censorship, Civil Rights laws, there's freedom of religion . . . where I live you can get busted smoking a joint and only get community service. You said your grandfather was a slave in Russia making you out to be around 40 years old--Mandela took office in the mid-1990s, indicating you were already "grown-up" and living in South Africa.///// At any rate its weird not liking DISNEY: Pinocchio, Bambi, Dumbo, Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid . . . TOY STORY 1, 2, and 3, Escape to Witch Mountain, Cat From Outer Space, The Shaggy DA, Herbie Goes Bananas ---DISNEY MOVIES RULE! (give or take a little).

Slavery in Russia, for the most part, ending in 1917, when the October revolution happened. It was my g-grandad, if I wrote grandad I'm sorry, it was my bad. My grandad died in WW2, I don't know much at all about him but it obviously wasn't him on the farm. I don't hate American themed superhero movies, I can't quite recall exactly what I said, or where, but 1) I thought Cpt. Sam sucked, and 2) It goes a little overboard with the patriotism. Nothing wrong with that, but seeing as how I'm not from there, it doesn't speak to me. Finding Nemo didn't speak to me all that much, either. From Pixar, my two favorites are Wall-E and Up, and they're, I think, the least kid-friendly of all the films they've done, at least thematically if not visually.

Tastes are what they are. I didn't come on here attacking kid fare, simply said I didn't like it.

As for America being A-OK and tolerant, sure it is, buddy. Pepper spraying students, hate speech vs gays (still no marriage in most states), war on women's rights to abortions (3 bills passed in Arizona), NDAA 2012, SOPA, which morphed into CISPA, shutting down MU + jailing founder, smearing Assange, going after Manning, 2 needless wars being wages RIGHT NOW, racial profiling of blacks and Arabs, disenfranchising black voters by instilling required IDs in election booths (I think 40+% of black people don't have IDs) even though the so-called election fraud is laughably small (like .1%), the Ryan budget that would further deregulate big business + lower taxes for rich and raise for poor- thereby further eroding the middle class, almost guaranteed cuts to social security, medicare + medicaid as part of Obama's proposed "grand bargain" ... everything I listed has been relevant in some way within the past 2 weeks alone, and this is straight from the top of my head. Don't talk about America and tolerant in the same sentence unless you're shooting for irony. US citizens are for the most part decent folk, but the gov't is a bunch of wankers on a power trip.

Think Kingsley's track record is more indescriminate rather than pitiful. He's like Nic Cage, he'll be in anything they'll pay him for i.e. Blood Rayne, but when he gets himself into something good he can be phenomenal in it i.e. Hugo and Ghandi.

For some reason though, I never liked movies/shows/books aimed at kids. Even at a young age, I felt like they were condescending and regularly talked down to their audience. Don't you watch Disney movies with your kids? Generally adults AND kids like "children's movies;" "fun for the entire family." The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast; even as a senior in high school, some of my classmates went out to see The Little Mermaid when it was new in 1989-90. Finding Nemo is another classic that both kids and parents enjoy.

Even though these aren't based on video games (to my knowledge), recently having Cars 2 (ugh), Fast Five, and Drive is all we need for anything to do remotely with cars. I'm not even counting Transformers 3(x_x).

This is one of the rare instances in which I am actually excited for a rotten development: Dwayne Johnson starring in Lore. I must admit, I have a weak spot for "The Rock" because, to me, he has always been a great entertainer and fun to watch. Now while some of his films are absolutely dreadful (i.e. The Tooth fairy), I do enjoy his action films no matter how cheesy they are. Plus the idea for Lore sounds pretty cool anyway and could make for a nice popcorn flick.

Regarding Ben Kingsley and Iron Man 3, it's also been reported Kingsley won't be the main villain of Iron Man 3, so he could star as just someone who at the end of the film is revealed to be the Mandarin, thereby setting up the events for part 4.

So Ridley Scott is going to do the Counselor next? That's good news, as I think the project is more promising that doing a prequel/sequel to Blade Runner.

Loved Mary Poppins, and I like Tom Hanks, but movies about the making of movies don't really excite me, as they usually end up feeling like simple making of featurettes for the films they're depicting. Plus, whenever they're showing a making of a classic, I end up feeling like I'd rather watch said classic (Ed Wood was a exception for me, partly because the films that were featured were so bad that it'd be very hard for the film to be as bad as them).

Dennis Lehane's adaptations have been pretty solid at the very least, and other than a couple of missteps (The Beach) Leonardo Dicaprio has been very good about choosing film roles. Now all that's left for Live By Night is to get a good director and it could very well be oscar worthy.

I actually like the sound of Lore, and even in terrible films, Dwayne Johnson gives an entertaining performance. Unfortunately, the screenwriters and the producers put a huge dent in my optimism. Maybe if they can get a good director, then I'll be more interested in the project.

I liked Mean Girls and Freaky Friday (one of the few remakes I enjoyed more than the original), but the premises for this new Sabrina movie just sound lame. Twilight meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer? Dont' the realize that by the time the film gets released the Twilight craze will have most likely evaportated, so it's not like comparisons are going to do it much good at the box office.

The Ben Kingsly thing was cool to hear about, everything in the 'Fresh' Developments were more 'meh' than anything, and the Need For Speed movie is just strait up stupid. Take it from a serious gamer, making a movie based on Need For Speed will end up probably worse than most video game movies to date which is saying a lot considering they haven't ever even made a good one.
