Box Office Guru Wrapup: Iron Man 2 Tops Robin Hood

Letters to Juliet rounds out the top three.

In a battle of dueling heroes, the man in the suit of iron defeated the English archer as Iron Man 2 held on in its second frame to take down Russell Crowe's Robin Hood, although Robin Hood did open at #1 internationally this weekend.

Falling 58.6% from its blockbuster opening, Paramount's Iron Man 2 collected an estimated $53M this weekend, bringing its cume to $212.1M. The second weekend was only $2M ahead of the original Iron Man which fell 48% from its opening weekend to $51.2M. Sequels are generally front-loaded so this second weekend fall was expected. With strong mid-week grosses, the weekend drops should start to level out over the next few weeks. After its first two weeks, Iron Man had grossed $177.8M on its way to a final total of $318.4M. If Iron Man 2 plays out in the same manner, it could end up with a final gross in the $350M range, which, while spectacular, would still be on the low end of pre-summer expectations.

Opening in second place with an estimated $37.1M was Robin Hood, the latest collaboration from Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott. This origin story of the famed 'steal from the rich, give to the poor' folk hero had a per screen average of $10,595 which was a little less than the Oscar-winning Gladiator had a little over 10 years ago. That movie opened with a nearly identical $34.8M on its way to a final gross $187.7M, and of course a bunch of Academy Awards. Don't expect Robin Hood to fare the same, at least in North America. Exit polls had the audience at 56% male and 63% at 30 years or older, with a CinemaScore grade of only a B-, meaning there will be rocky roads ahead. Internationally however, it was a different story as Robin Hood opened with $74M from 56 territories, making it the second biggest international opening for distributor Universal, behind only King Kong. That puts the total global opening at $111.1M. And just for the sake of fun, Kevin Costner's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves opened in the summer of 1991 to $25.6M and a per screen average of $10,817 on its way to a $165.5M total. It could be a little embarassing to Crowe/Scott if their Robin Hood can't hit the same heights as Kevin Costner did nearly 20 years ago.

Also debuting this weekend was the romance Letters to Juliet which grossed an estimated $13.75M from 2,968 theaters, for a per screen average of $4,633. Starring Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave, the Summit release, as one might expect, played 81% female with 63% of the audience being over 25. The film was a good counter product to the male-heavy action films and had a very strong CinemaScore of A- meaning good word of mouth could help propel this film to a strong finish.

The last of the three major films opening this weekend was the Queen Latifah starrer Just Wright. The romantic-comedy, which centers around a professional basketball player coming back from injury, opened with an estimated $8.5M and a per screen average of $4,642. The opening was decent, but not great, and should find a bigger audience on DVD for Fox Searchlight.

Landing in the top five again in its eight weekend of release was Dreamworks' How To Train Your Dragon which fell only 23% to $5.1M, according to estimates lifting the animation sensation to $207.7M. Falling 48% and landing in sixth place was Freddy Krueger and A Nightmare on Elm Street which slashed up an estimated $4.7M this weekend, bringing its cume to $56M.

The comedy pairing of Steve Carell and Tina Fey once again held on strongly, dropping only 26% from last weekend with Date Night, which grossed $4M, according to estimates, bringing its total to $86.7M. Fellow romantic-comedy The Back-up Plan hasn't fared nearly as well, falling this weekend by 51%, to an estimated $2.5M, bringing its disappointing cume to $34.2M.

Rounding out the top 10 were two films with opposite trajectories. Furry Vengeance ended up in the 9th spot this week with an estimated $2.3M bringing its total to $15.1M, while Clash of the Titans took in an estimated $1.3M bringing its total to a robust $160.2M.

The top ten films grossed $132.3M which was up 3% from last year when Angels & Demons opened in the top spot with $46.2M; and up 6% from 2008 when The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian opened at number one with $55M.

If "Iron Man 2" had been good, it would have opened with $160 million and closed with about $450 million (a'la "Dead Man's Chest" or "The Dark Knight"). Think of the effect that would have had on the business: the 3D craze might have fizzled (why deal with 3D when a 2D blockbuster outshines them all?) and Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau would have achieved at least quasi-legendary status. But as it is, the result will be financially the same as the original (and vastly superior) "Iron Man", but minus the critical adoration that made the film special.

Do you hear that noise? That is the FAIL boat coming to pick you up.

Iron Man 2 was great, so try again. Plenty if not the vast majority of people loved it. You fail.

Iron Man 2 was incredibly disappointing. I found myself sitting there staring at my watch wondering if it was going to end soon. Felt like a shorter Spiderman 3

Did you just say that Dead Man's Chest was a good film? I'm sorry but I beg to differ. DMC was an absolutely awful film.

There's just been such a surge of "Comic Book Movies Finally Finally FINALLY Done Right" in the Iron Man and Batman franchises that the (marginally) weakest of the 4 so far gets slammed hard for not being on top. Everyone hating on it and comparing it to abominable films like Spider-Man 3 or the Fantastic 4 movies needs to sit back and count their blessings; without having been previously treated to Batman Begins, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight, this movie would have been recognized for the fantastically well-done, well-performed, and all-around purely entertaining movie that it deserves to be recognized as.

Congratulations, Christopher Nolan and Jon Favreau; you have officially elevated comic book movies to the master level. Now all we need is an Academy Award nomination for the next Batman...

Dead Man's Chest a good movie? You lose all credibility with that remark.

Good for IM2 it was great, just not as good as the first. I didn't really like RObin, I though it was so very slow and boring.

Yeah sad to say Robin Hood was pretty boring. Iron Man 2 wont top Shrek 4 this Friday, but god I hope it does.

It's gonna be hard to beat a bunch of kids going "I WANNA SEE SHREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!" even though they should see HTTYD. :3 But overall, I see no surprises other then how bad Furry Vengeance has actually done. haha

Iron Man 2 was a lot of fun, but unlike the first one was more reminiscent of a cartoon. It fulfilled my dreams of a comic book movie, but I think it lost a little bit of the appeal that helped carry the first one. Of course, it will do just as well anyway, but I think that overall the movie not quite up to the first ones standards.

Exactly. I'm pass the honeymoon phase now (ha) and I realize it's not as good as the first but it did have that comic book, super fun feel to it and it'll still do amazingly.

I enjoyed Iron Man 2 a lot on Saturday, even though I had low expectations. The theater I saw it in was packed. Honestly, despite it's flaws, I think I enjoyed it just as much as the first. It was funny, and the acting was really good (especially from RDJ). The whole "spread" joke was my favorite line in the movie. I was also more satisfied with the action scenes in this movie, even if they were shorter than I'd have preferred.

Unfortunately, that Shrek dreck will likely take number 1 this upcoming weekend.

Irn man 2 sucked, I would have walked out if it had not been for the second half finally picking up the pace. The villain was stock, his motivations were lame and stock as well, he never felt like a threat or a menace eveb after showing off, the pacing was lopsided, the plot was pretty weak and all over the place. Overall this movie was pretty lackluster. Also it seemed like everyone was acting like Robert Downey jr, with a cocky smart ass attitude, and because of that I began to hate every character. The parts I did like were the Subtle (and not so subtle) nods to the rest of the Marvel Universe, and some of the latter action scenes, but definitely not worth my 12$ I expected to see a big drop off this weekend so im not surprised. When the next big film comes along it will sweep this movie under the carpet because overall it was pretty damn forgettable.

arendr on 05-17-2010 09:20 AM

Yeah, I hated every character as well. It was like watching a bunch of people from far away. Everyone was so smarmy (actually something that annoyed me a bit about Downey in the first film as well). Sam Rockwell (who I love) was probably just hired because he plays smarmy so well.

If this was a perfect world, the top 3 movies would be HTTYD, IM2 and Kick Ass.
Shr4k would open to a dismal 600K on it's way to 2M domestically and Michael Bay would catch a heart attack, die and force the studio to hire David Croenenberg to direct the 3rd TR.

And then I snap back to the real world again...=(

Iron man 2 wasn't very good. I'm not going to say its bad, cause its not. It was a little too childish for my taste, and literally it seemed like the script was written, and then they were told to add in a bunch of other things. It felt episodic, and it seemed like the villain showed up, and then disappeared for an hour, and then showed up again. I was a bit bored. But I saw it at a drive in theater, and it was quite hard to see, so I'll give it another shot some time.

While I thought the pace of Iron Man 2 was a little fast, I still enjoyed it very much. I think Iron Man's first half was better than Iron Man 2's and I think Iron Man 2's second half was better than Iron Man's.

But, that's just my own opinion.

brandalf on 05-17-2010 12:31 AM

Sssss yea I really enjoyed the first Iron Man but IM2 was a bit disapointing I mean it was good but not great. I'd compare to X-Men 2

Bigbrother

Bigbrother on 05-17-2010 05:00 AM

Which is about right I'd say as most people found X2 superior to X-Men. Not getting all the Iron Man hate, one of the best sequals to one of the best comic book movie's of all time and one of the very few to actually succeed at any level in turning it up and making it bigger.

Here in North America, ROBBIN HOOD, based on its subject mastter, isn't as "hip" as IRON MAN 2.
Average Americans think of ROBBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS or KEVIN COSTNER and ERROL FLYNN as ROBBIN HOOD . . . as though ROBBIN HOOD is some sort of pansy . . . (well that's how I think of Robbin Hood--then also, when I picture what an "Average North American" is, I think of blond-haired blue-eyed men and women--which is kind of a Germanic stereotype.

What does an Average American look like, and how does an Average American think? (it would help us market movies better)

I'll tend to second all those who say IM2 was okay but not great. To me it just seemed more of the same, only bigger and louder. I certainly didn't hate it and I'm glad it's doing well, because I like Jon Favreau and RDJ, so I want them to continue getting work. I notice Jon gave himself a much bigger role in this one :-)

Bloody Mathias

Bloody Mathias on 05-17-2010 07:36 AM

I think the fact that IM2 will end up almost exactly where IM ended (just north of $300 m) says a lot about the quality of the sequel and the word of mouth. Absoultely everybody seems to be saying "Meh, it was okay. Just not as good as the first).

And Robin Hood will be lucky to break $100 m with the toxic word of mouth people are spreading about the long and slow borefest. How embarrassing that people like that cheesy Kevin Costner flick more than a Crowe/Scott production.

Bring on that horrible Shrek sequel and McGruber.

I read your reviews on Robin Hood as well as others and I think you need to see it again because it was great. The History Channel showcased the reason behind the story, but for those who do not watch the history channel, this movie was outstanding, entertaining, and Russell Crowe gave us another Oscar winning Performance. Wake up Hollywood...Talent...Russell Crowe Oscar performance maybe this year awards will be given out to people who worked for them...wake up Hollywood!

Someone wrote that they felt "Letter's to Julia" would out due Robin Hood at the box office this coming weekend, which is stupid to say. That is what we consider "I know the ending to the story" her love for so many years comes in on a Horse looking wonderful..as a later baby boomer "how insulting" the movie states "your never to old for love, your knight can still come in on a white horse and carry you away" Another Girlie, Girlie, you can find love at any age.

Robin Hood will be another major hit because it was a movie that any one can enjoy and the acting was outstanding...I give Robin Hood six stars out of five...go see it and do not listen to the reviews judge for yourself. The theater I saw it was sold out for all performances, and they were showing in two theaters, comments over all I want to see this again.
