Oh, cripes, this happened last year too. The Avengers, the best movie of the Summer, was kept off the top spot by the Limited-Release Moonrise Kingdom, a direct violation of the rules.

Rotten Tomatoes doesn't really rank these movies on the scorecard by how good they are, it's the actual percentage. Last year Avengers got 92%, and was a lot better than Moonrise Kingdom, but because the actual percentage was lower, it took the number 2 spot. The scorecard isn't by opinion, it is just numbers.

The "rules" is that the movie was in 600 theaters OR reviewed by 100 critics. That way there is no rule that requires the movie to be a "blockbuster." Also they are using critic percentages and not using fan/viewer percentages or even combined percentages. So there is an expectation that this critic's list will not coincide with the viewer's list.

I loved Mud, it is so far one of the bests 2013 has offered. However it shouldn't be on this list because I isn't really a Summer Movie. It came out in April.

they should only include movies that start out as wide releases and movies that are actually advertised on tv. its possible Mud is an entertaining movie, but it really shouldn't be included and I saw no commercials for it on tv.

People, they clearly show which movies will make it into this list. This is from the first page:

"As the summer's major releases (films reaching at least 600 theaters, or with 100+ critic reviews) come out and opinions come in, we're just as curious as you: How do all these movies stack up against each other?!"

Mud reached over 600 theatres on May 10th and it also reached over 100 reviews in the early days of May [about May 6th].

What I'm more concerned with is how this "Adjusted Score" works, as the way it is right now, Mud has an adjusted score of 105.322%, which doesn't make sense. How are these reviews being weighted?

Hey, Mitch. I disagree with RT use of "600" theatres as a cut off. Most of their readers won't ever see movies with this few theatres. Anything below 1000 should be considered "limited" and not qualify. What good does knowing about Mud do someone who will never have a chance to see it? Even Walmart and Redbox might not carry it when its released on home video.

Side note: I actually saw 'Mud' tonight even though I thought it would never reach my theatre. Very solid movie. I saw it knowing nothing aside from having only seen a short minute and a half clip that told me little to nothing about the story. It felt good not knowing what would happen.

You can disagree with their cutoff, but based on their own rules for this list, 'Mud' qualifies both for theatre count and for number of reviews. If Mud had reached 1000 theatres, as you claimed was a good cutoff, would you have been perfectly fine with this? Their list is called the 'Summer Movie Scorecard 2013'. Has nothing really to do with blockbusters, as some assume, just movies released in the summer frame.

Thank you Mitchell Nash for using common sense, I swear do people even read the opening of the list. It's called Summer Movie Scorecard, not Summer Blockbuster Movie Scorecard. Frankly, I find it disrespectful to the filmmakers who worked so hard to make a good movie(Mud and Before Midnight this year, Moonrise Kingdom last year) and people say their movies don't deserve to be recognized because they didn't make or cost a lot money. It doesn't have to be a big-budget superhero film to be a summer movie, it just has to come out in the summer, and abide by the simple rules outlined before the list began.

Thank you. I ended up seeing 'Mud' having only seen a short clip before hand and not having any idea of the premise. I was thoroughly entertained. People get pissed at some weird things. The movie meets the criteria that RT made. The arguments made against it aren't well thought out and come off as rants.

I have to say after reading some of the reviews "The Hangover Part III" was treaded on pretty badly for horrible reasons. If a critic hated any of them it's hard to convert them to like something they're walking in already disliking. Part II was too similar and Part III was too different, can you really please critics these days? Nope.

Part III is too different? I doubt that's what most critics were complaining about. It seems more that it's just not as fresh, exciting, or fun as the first and that it changes up the story we saw before in the first two but doesn't replace it with much of anything.

That's what RT states as the requirements. Mud reached over 600 theatres on May 10th and it also reached over 100 reviews in the early days of May [about May 6th]. That means it qualifies for this list.

"Mud" isn't a summer movie. Don't even bother going to the last page. If you seen Star Trek and FF6, you're good so far. (Iron Man 3 is a major disappointment)

Sta Trek ID was a joke. It should never have been filmed. The whole alternate universe trajectory of the New Star Treks is a losing proposition from the beginning. Just a lame plot devise to rewarm the old dishes. They added absolutely nothing to the Khan mythos.

Yeah, Mud is a real wild card here. It was released in April, but I guess because it saw wide release in May (which btw guys, is unofficially the start of summer in the movie world) is considered a summer movie, which, eh, whatever. In my opinion, they should've done a Summer Blockbuster Movie Scorecard or something to differentiate between those limited releases and not confuse certain people.

My first reaction after reading this, and I'm sure most people reacted the same way, was thinking "what?". But now, after reading it and thinking about it I have to say, "what?". I do now understand something, but still can't figure out what the "Adjusted Score" really represents.

First of all, does the formula used benefits the movies with a bigger number of reviews? If yes, why? Does a movie deserve a better score just because more critics bothered/had enough time to see it and write a review about it? Really? It doesn't seem fair to me. And did that formula also completely ignored the "Average Rating" of the critics reviews? If yes, why? And then why use a formula and not just order them based on their "TomatoMeter"? If you notice, the order would be exactly the same! If not, how the hell is 'Mud' the number one, when 'Before Midnight' has a much higher "Average Rating"?

If anyone knows the answer to some of this questions, please reply.

I'm confused as to why they even have the adjusted score, I noticed that Man of Steel had a higher adjusted score than Epic, yet Epic is still above it, what's the point?

I've got a theory that it made be there to break ties since Mud and Before Midnight have the same on the tomatometer, yet Mud is above it because it has a higher adjusted score, though I still can't help but question the use when the average rating for Before Midnight is an 8.8 out of 10 as opposed to Mud's 7.9 out of 10 shouldn't Before Midnight still be higher.

Saw The Man Of Steel Sunday. Growing up with the comics basically ruined it as a continuation of the Superman franchise. Much better as a stand alone movie. Too bad they cheated and just gave us a word for word reproduction of the animated series. That and the suit. Bad enough that they changed the color, but to make it from latex instead of cloth is a little too much. Best version of the suit was the one Dean Cain wore.
