Despite the gut-wrenching gimmickry (and Monica Belluci hanging out in her birthday suit), Irreversible is almost Irredeemable

Consensus: Though well-filmed, Irreversible feels gratuitous in its extreme violence.

Irreversible is a demanding and audacious but thoroughly rewarding cinematic experience that has been thrilling audiences since its world premiere in Cannes and its North American debut screenings at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals earlier this year. The film will be released by Lions Gate Films on March 7, 2003. Even for a director that has been known to invite controversy in films such as Sodomites (1998), Seul contre tous (I Stand Alone) (1998), and Carne (1991), Noé’s Irreversible can still be considered the ultimate in bravura filmmaking. An emotional odyssey that unspools in reverse from gut-wrenching violence to sweetly observed moments of sublime tenderness, the film stars Monica Bellucci and real-life husband Vincent Cassel as a couple whose story is told over the course of a fateful evening in a series of long takes. The film features two unsettling and graphic scenes of violence and sexuality that are difficult to watch. However, these grim sights are nestled within a carefully constructed -- although unconventional -- narrative which serves as a counterpoint to moments of striking tenderness, and the film is in some ways a study of darkness and light. -- © Lions Gate Films [More]

Reviews for Irreversible
The detached clinical methodical style of some reptilian film critics since its release scrutinize the positioning of the camera in the rape scene-- almost like an autopsy.
Quando o filme chegou ao fim, confesso que chorei – não pelo que havia acontecido, mas sim em função do que ainda iria acontecer.
While this movie does not encourage repeat viewing, those film fans who can steel their emotions will experience a singular film that will be nearly impossible to forget no matter how hard they try.
...not a great film, and not an easy one to watch, but it is an important one, a powerful argument against our old ways of doing business
Extremely difficult to endure, and if you choose to endure it, it could leave you feeling angry and upset. Nevertheless, this is serious filmmaking, and Noe is a gifted filmmaker.
By spinning his tale in reverse order, Noe has come up with a thought-provoking drama that's more than just a gimmick.
A fascinating study in excess, a movie that seduces and repulses as it explores the merciless nature of fate.
There is nothing moral about Irreversible -- only sneeringly superior and nihilistic, like Johnny Rotten at his most fatuous.
The acting, especially from the feral Cassel and self-possessed Bellucci, is good.
...causes you to question not just the filmmaker's motives but your own reactions to what he has chosen to show you.
Has a raw immediacy and momentum I've rarely seen sustained over the length of a movie.
This story told in natural progression would be far too ironic and predictable to hold our interest.
Fails because of its gratuitous rape and violence and also because of its pretentious and intellectually one-dimensional grounds, which make the violence at the end feel even worse.
Noé gave up money at the box office to achieve his excruciatingly dark vision. Moviegoers are richer for the sacrifice.
