Consensus: Though well-filmed, Irreversible feels gratuitous in its extreme violence.

Irreversible is a demanding and audacious but thoroughly rewarding cinematic experience that has been thrilling audiences since its world premiere in Cannes and its North American debut screenings at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals earlier this year. The film will be released by Lions Gate Films on March 7, 2003. Even for a director that has been known to invite controversy in films such as Sodomites (1998), Seul contre tous (I Stand Alone) (1998), and Carne (1991), Noé’s Irreversible can still be considered the ultimate in bravura filmmaking. An emotional odyssey that unspools in reverse from gut-wrenching violence to sweetly observed moments of sublime tenderness, the film stars Monica Bellucci and real-life husband Vincent Cassel as a couple whose story is told over the course of a fateful evening in a series of long takes. The film features two unsettling and graphic scenes of violence and sexuality that are difficult to watch. However, these grim sights are nestled within a carefully constructed -- although unconventional -- narrative which serves as a counterpoint to moments of striking tenderness, and the film is in some ways a study of darkness and light. -- © Lions Gate Films [More]

Reviews for Irreversible
It makes pure pornography look pretty appealing in comparison. It's the type of picture that will have critics applauding and audiences gagging.
The opening 50 minutes are brutal, but if you can take the punishment, you’ll probably be wowed by Noé’s skills as a filmmaker.
Strangely enough, this collection of gimmickry, brutality, and hollow stylings is best at its least visceral.
For those who can stomach it, the film is a marvelous -- though brutal -- work of art.
Noé's stunt is an exploitation movie with a gimmick, not to mention a vacuous philosophy.
Virtually plotless with insipid dialogue and not even as graphically violent as a Peckinpah outing.
Noe's considerable accomplishment is to examine the relationship between life and art, time and memory.
Few films are as uncomfortably involving as this one -- the techniques lack subtlety, and could have come off as amateurish, but they pound and build in the way that bad recollections circle in the mind to create queasiness and stress.
For all the virtuosic technique on view, the schematic nature of the project is too glibly nihilistic.
Gaspar Noé positions Irréversible as a structuralist countdown, but a structuralist wank job is more like it.
Irréversible has virtually nothing unique to say about 21st century human relations or society.
The worst one can say about Irréversible is that it bores more than it shocks. It’s essentially a 30-minute film blown out to three times that length.
No 'star rating' has been applied above because conventional indications of 'good' or 'bad' simply do not apply to this film.
