This adaptation of the classic novel by award-wining author Scott O'Dell, tells the poignant tale of a young girl separated from her people, and forced to survive on her own. O'Dell based his story on a real-life incident. On a small island not too far from California, an Indian people live peacefully... until whale hunters, hungry for wealth, invade their shores. The tribe decides to abandon their home, but one girl, Karana, gets left behind. Now she must learn to take care of herself, and to confront the prohibitions imposed on females by her religious leaders. For as a girl she has never been allowed to make or to touch weapons, and now Karana will have to teach herself to do so... if she is to stay alive. In the true O'Dell tradition, "Island of the Blue Dolphins" offers a strong and inspirational heroine. [More]
