Clair's talent would not survive long into the coming of sound, but at this point in his career he seems marvelously assured, creative, and playful.

Turner Classic Movies Online

It's a madcap, sophisticated comedy of the highest order.

Combustible Celluloid

The plot is very slight, but director Clair maintains a tight grasp of the action and the end result is a fun and enjoyable piece of playful absurdity.
