This movie was great - no idea why the critics are being so harsh. What do they expect from a fairytale? It sounds like they want it to be complex and depressing. It's very funny and the action is great (but sometimes intense). Reminded me of Princess Bride.

I really really liked it! I took my son and was prepared to martyr myself for his sake. WRONG! The trailer made it look like overblown cgi trash but it was very well acted, rather (appropriately) simply told, good characters, great realistic scenery, and good use of humor. 4 o/o 5. SEE IT.

I felt it was a very competent script, with good action and excellent CGI. Is it inventive and earth shattering? No. But it's also more than a kids movie.
I think as each filmmaker tries his hand at 3D technology, their first effort is going to be more form and less substance.
Bryan Singer - I wanted to see a fairy tale, this is all before Alice in Wonderland or any of that, brought to life on a full grand scale. What if a beanstalk grew miles high in the sky? What if giants were real? I wanted to take a simple, the simplest fairy tale, and embellish it, and kind of make an original fairy tale, but still echo those read to me as a kid. I wanted to explore this new space of fully rendered CG characters, creature characters, lens capture, it's part of the business that interests me.

Overall I think Singer's a very talented Director, although he's only made one movie I'd consider to be great (The Usual Suspects), the rest has either been enjoyable popcorn entrainment or essentially mediocre. I'm just getting tired of all the overly CGI saturated films coming out of Hollywood that care about nothing but action sequences and generic action cliché's. I'd like Hollywood to move back to the old trend of bolstering historical epics with impressive sets and art direction (they still exit, but aren't as popular or financially successful as they used to be) and more crime drama/gangster films that actually put a decent amount of effort into dialogue and character development. Movies like this one are too safe and marketable for my tastes personally, but their the kind of films that usually sell in Hollywood, even when the critics give them unfavourable receptions.

One of the reasons why I love LOTR, is because of all that wonderful production design. All the work that went into creating the shire and all the other sets. There was little CG, and only used when needed, unlike The Hobbit, which seemed to relish the over-use of CG. I agree, that I would like to see more hand-made craft in big studio films.

I dunno, man...LOTR is my favorite trilogy of all time, but you have to admit there was quite a bit of CGI in LOTR, and at times the CGI really sucked. Like when Galadriel becomes all inverted and shit, or when that lightning hits Caradhras, it looked dreadfully fake. Even though The Hobbit had more CGI, it looked way better. (Not the visuals in general, but the CG itself.)
Mar 2 - 05:47 AM
I meant there was more effort on sets and make-up, unlike the Hobbit, where there were green-screens and CG orcs.

I think this will be rotten but from the reviews so far, it might be in the 50s like a 54% or a 56%. When I first saw this trailer I thought it would do terrible, but I don't know. I'm still not going to see it, though.

This year's John Carter. I'm guessing it will be very entertaining but critics will bury it before the end of it's opening weekend.
Feb 27 - 12:29 PM
I've been looking forward to this ever since it was called "Jack the Giant Killer" and was supposed to come out last June. The first trailer caught my eye in December 2011 and I've been eagerly awaiting it ever since, thanks to my love of fantasy movies, Bryan Singer and that fantastic cast. However, while it looked like a movie that I'd like, I always expected critics to utterly destroy it. It's doing better than I thought; I hope it ends up fresh.
Feb 27 - 12:23 PM
Typically, critics will always dislike fantasy, no matter how good it is (i.e. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey only getting a 65) and they will love "high art" or Oscar-bait dramas no matter how bad they are (i.e. Amour getting a 92).
Feb 27 - 12:25 PM
All three LOTR got over 90%. Pan's Labyrinth got 90%. All eight Harry Potters have gotten certified fresh ratings. There are some holes in your "critics will always dislike fantasy".

It's coming out Friday and so far ZERO reviews?
DANGER, DANGER, DANGER avoid at all costs.
Feb 26 - 08:16 AM
Honestly, the trailers made it look awful. However, because it's Singer, I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt and wait to read some reviews before relegating this into my obnoxiously deep "don't care" pile.
Feb 25 - 03:47 PM
Brian Singer is an overrated, weak director, and despite a great cast its going to be like his other disappointments.
Feb 25 - 03:42 PM
I saw it at the premiere. It wasn't bad. Better than a lot of other family adventure movies that come out these days. It didn't take itself very seriously, so the costumes were very... plasticy. It's an ok 3/5 sort of movie. Good to see if you want to watch something, but nothing else peaks your interest. Ewen McGregor is always fun to see in any movie.
Feb 23 - 08:19 PM
My prediction is that Mcquarrie (screenwriter) can make any stupid concept into a great movie.
Feb 22 - 05:18 PM
I think it will be a pretty good movie... eventhough the reviews might be bad I just might like it as it looks like another john carter....I will see it the next weekend for sure
Feb 22 - 05:41 AM
I think the movie actually looks pretty sweet. Good actors, good director, and a big budget could equal a surprisingly fresh take on the age old tale of Jack and his magic beans.
Feb 20 - 01:53 PM
Trying to be optimistic. SOme say it could be this year's John Carter. I think it could be this year's "Snow White & The Huntsman".
Snow White was good, not great, but solid and I liked it. I like this lineup of a cast. Fingers crossed.
Feb 18 - 09:05 PM
Who needs to predict??? We all know this is going to be a colossal (no pun intended) flop.
Feb 18 - 07:25 PM
Last minute title change...big name director's first attempt at a new genre...obvious studio interference...confused marketing campaign...bafflingly huge budget for such a seemingly niche movie...methinks we've found this years "John Carter"...
