Jackass 2.5 to Debut Online
Finally, the Internet has a useful purpose!
Johnny Knoxville and his Jackass crew have compiled an hour of new stunts -- and in just under a week, it'll be coming to a Web browser near you.
Jackass 2.5, the quasi-sequel we discussed in September, will mix new footage with scenes left over from last year's Jackass: Number Two. It will also, as Variety reports, debut exclusively on the Web, courtesy of an agreement between Blockbuster, Paramount, and MTV.
Starting December 19, Jackass 2.5 will stream (for free, with ads) at Jackassworld.com. Blockbuster, which will be hosting the stream, has paid for a one-week exclusive. After December 26, the film will be available for download at other online retailers, such as iTunes and Amazon, as well as on DVD. According to Variety, "users will be able to embed clips from the pic, along with ads, anywhere on the Web."
Blockbuster will be marketing Jackass 2.5 "almost exclusively online," using, among other methods, a Facebook application; meanwhile, Paramount's Thomas Lesinski has heralded the deal as "a distribution model that's never been done before," telling Variety that the studio's goal "is to prove that there is an audience to watch content online."
Think the WGA will be paying attention to how all this plays out?

Gimy writes: on Dec 13 2007 05:24 AM well considering not many people know 'bout it...i doubt it'll have any sort of real impact. i love these SOB's and i think they're hilarious. there's just a world of difference between dumbsh3ts sending THEIR home videos for everyone to see on the web...and these guys. with that said, its a shame they only have one more movie left(besides this one) before it gets too stale. by the way, if you love these guys...try out Dirty Sanchez...the movie. its not AS good as Jackass...but they're hilarious just the same. dahluzz writes: on Dec 13 2007 06:16 AM hey if this works, why even release movies into the theaters? the american box office isn't a profitable industry and once everyone has a kick-butt home theater system and high speed web, it will negate spending (at least) $10 on a ticket, not to mention gas money. sad, but not so unrelistic (over, say, the next 5 years). for now, though, this is cool. Gimy writes: on Dec 13 2007 09:20 AM nathan, the time is running out for these cats and they're smart enough to realize that. instead of COMPLETELY ruining the franchise, they're giving us little bits and pieces(ie, LEFTOVERS!) till the last and final...3. not stupid, just a nice little way of making some pocket change when in reality youre not seeing much of anything new. besides, some of the guys REALLY do not want to do a 3rd(uh, bam...) and they all HAVE to be involved for it to work. look for 3 to be out IN THEATERS...in 2 years. if not by then...i'd probably say these guys are done. dahl...i'd say its closer to 10 years but you're right...theaters are very close to becoming obselete. besides big time action flix, the experience is about the same...if not WORSE than sitting in the comfort of your own home. children's flix are the most obvious choice to forego the theater entirely. the insane food prices, the fact you have to be around 2sshole strangers some of the time...its almost a chore. when studios finally give the dvd's the same release date...theaters are done. fbp writes: on Dec 13 2007 09:52 AM I don't think the actual cinema will ever go away. It would be like restaurants going out of business because of kitchens in the house. Plus, it's fun to go when there aren't a bunch of annoying loud people around and when the theatre managers don't mess up the projection. (Reply to this) |

minderbinder writes: on Dec 13 2007 02:35 PM Whether this does well or not, it won't really be any indication of whether movies in general will benefit from this kind of distribution. There's a big difference between a bunch of gags strung together and an actual movie with a plot - something like Jackass won't suffer from being watched in little bits with commercials, but would you want to watch any other movie like that?
