Assisting the odd couple are Jake's sunny assistant Derek, his fork-tongued secretary Gertrude, and of course his wrinkly old bulldog Max. The show, which originated in a two-part episode of MATLOCK, was itself later spun off into the series DIAGNOSIS: MURDER.
