Seminal alternative punk band Jane's Addiction was the brainchild of the famously bizarre singer Perry Farrell. The drug-using eccentric Farrell was known for his interest in California subcultures like surfing and mysticism. GIFT, an oddly surreal and dreamlike film which Farrell directed and starred in with his beautiful then-girlfriend Casey Niccoli (who also directed their most famous video, for the song "Been Caught Stealing,") mixes live footage with a dramatic and tragic storyline. The rough outline concern's Niccoli dying of a heroine does and Farrell dealing with it. Mixing an odd narrative, Jane's addiction performances and songs, and a haunting soundtrack from former Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist John Frusciante, GIFT is a true original. [More]
