  • This collection is the largest and most wide ranging ever put together of Japanese film of the last two decades. It is made coherent by the fact that all of its protagonists are on the wrong side of the law, but discovers the enormous variety of ways Japan has dealt with the subject. Buddy movies, rites of passage, farce, science fiction, film noir... it is difficult to think of a vehicle that is not used to elucidate that life of those who have chosen or been forced to live on the outside of this most conservative of societies.
