Ostensibly... This romantic drama stars Toni Collette as Sandy, a high-strung Australian geologist assigned to escort Japanese businessman Hirotmitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) on a tour through the outback. Ostensibly he's there to visit the various mines his company co-owns, but his real motives are mysterious and soon he is urging her to drive deep into the middle of the Pilabra Desert. A mutual dislike for one another, enhanced by vast cultural differences keep them at arm's length at first, but when their jeep gets mired in sand in the middle of nowhere, their fight for survival leads them towards a deep human connection. They find themselves falling in love as they drift aimlessly amidst the desolate beauty of the area, but soon comes a sudden, unexpected shock. Written by Alison Tilson and directed by Sue Brooks, JAPANESE STORY explores the distances between cultures, people, and the vast emptiness of Australia's interior regions. Yet even the spectacular desert scenery can't compete with Collette's complex stunner of a performance. Suntanned, tender, gutsy and raw, she plumbs frighteningly real depths of emotion and vulnerability. Tsunashima is also excellent, bringing simplicity and grace to an enigmatic role. [More]

Reviews for Japanese Story
A mawkish fusion of Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout and the recent Lost in Translation, with cultural politics even more problematic than those Sofia Coppola danced about in her film.
Colette, propelled by a beautifully understated script, digs deep to deliver the performance of her career.
This is that rare sort of film that is not about what happens, but about what happens then.
Brooks and Collette make us see how fragile our grip on outer reality can be, how quickly it can change, and how the Earth remains eternal beneath those temporal shifts above.
It isn't a major entry in the growing genre of Australian desert dramas, but audiences everywhere should respond to the fundamental human emotions it explores.
A script as underdeveloped as Australia's Pilbara Desert can wear on audience patience.
Episodically effective...the likable characters and ever-present splendor of the desert landscape register strongly
Collette truly has a face the camera loves, and her expressiveness gives substance and symmetry to the uneven Japanese Story.
Fails to engage us in the lives of its characters because it never really introduces them.
Japanese Story takes its audience on a series of physical and emotional journeys, but comes across as artificial and forced.
Despite the efforts of both lead actors, as well as some rather contrived screenwriting by Alison Tilson, the romantic pairing of the somewhat effeminate Tsunashima and somewhat masculine Collette isn't really that believable.
The platform gives Collette plenty of room to strut her acting chops, which she does with subtlety.
