On the 2013 summer movie scorecard before midnight beats out mud yet before midnight is not on the list despite an average score of 8.8 and 98 percent

I know, it bothers me that Before Midnight still isn't getting the recognition it deserves. It's always left off lists. Making it as No. 1 on this summer's list must have been a mistake. The trilogy is left off best trilogy lists despite being the No. 2 trilogy of all time based on the tomato meter.

And I bet it won't even get nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars next year, even though it's the best reviewed movie of the year so far. And for me it's the best movie released since Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004).

Before Midnight is easily my favorite movie of the year. I'm astounded at the stupidity of it not being included on the list.

So Before Midnight suddenly isn't on this list despite beating Mud in this years Best of Summer, Francis Ha doesn't make the list, but Star Trek Into Darkness does, and Moonrise Kingdom is below The Avengers despite being above it on the 2012 Summer Movie Scorecard, nice job guys

Fair enough, but based on their own list it should be ahead, they need consistency between lists.

yeah their basing it on this weird Bayesian formula thing, which doesn't even make sense since half the movies on the list go over 100% using that formula.

Not debating whether it's a good film or not, but it certainly doesn't scream 'Summer Movie' to me.

What happened with Terminator 2? Last time I checked it was at 97% positive. Anyway, I think that film derseves to at least be in the top ten.

Anyway, the rankings in general are way off in my opinion, but that's what you get with films that are so closely rated. At least most of the films listed here are great. My least favorite of these would probably be Hero (even the consensus says it's easy of the eyes not the heart) and The Simpsons Movie (its pretty funny, but hardly a great film. I'd much rather have seen Inception or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade take its spot).

As for my favorites, I honestly wouldn't know where to begin. Inception, Wall-e, Up, Back to the Future, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Aliens, The Indiana Jones trilogy, The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Avengers, Toy Story 3, The Lion King, Jurassic Park, I wouldn't know how I would personally rank them.

I agree about Terminator 2 being much too low on that joke of a list. But I liked Hero and I think it's a clever movie with some of the best visuals and action sequences of any movie of it's kind.

This is a worthless list forget about opinion. Why is Michael Moore's flop Cuban propaganda film "Sicko" here?...ahead of T2 no less. The list doesn't even get its facts right!! Close Encounters of the Third Kind was not a Summer Movie!!! Not even in the southern hemisphere. Release date: November 16, 1977, last I checked that was fall.

Making 4 times its budget and receiving a 92% t-meter makes it a "flop" how?

I think RT should stop making lists dependent on the meter, I'd rather see an editors person opinion list than these computer generated, uninspired print-outs.

This list is atrocious! Setting aside the fact that what people like is subjective and based on opinion, the only rational behind this list is based solely on aggregated critic reviews. Critics views don't always equate to popularity (or a good movie). At least a list based on ticket sales would be a bit more accurate. To me, "Summer Movie" doesn't always equate to being intellectually good, but to movies that were really fun and memorable. How is Jurassic Park ranked #37?? And Independence Day isn't even on the list! Those are two of my most memorable movie-going experiences of my life! Star Wars and Apollo 13 in the 30's? Up? #2? Really? I'm not saying it wasn't a good movie, but #2 best summer movie in 37 years? No.

"We're using a weighted formula that takes the Tomatometer, the number of reviews, and the year of release into account. In order to qualify, each movie needs at least 20 reviews, and to have been released wide in the months between May and August."

Why? How? Are just some of the questions that came to my mind when I read this. Give us some kind of simple explanation about how that works and why do you think it's a better way to rank summer movies. Otherwise I doubt anyone will understand or care about this joke of a list RT. I certainly don't.

One last thing: Mud wasn't released wide, it was limited, so either remove it or add all other limited released movies that fit the other parameters to qualify for the list, like 'Before Midnight' for example.

I'm just trying to help! Thank you for your attention.

Aug 6 - 10:46 AM

J.D Dean

J.D Dean

Mud wasn't released wide initially, but over time it went wide just like Before Midnight, which is why it qualifies for the list as for why Before Midnight isn't on the list, who knows? Maybe their scared of backlash. And as for the weighted formula I also agree that they should explain, so at least we know why this list is so messed up.
