Mitsubishi Announces 3D Blu-Ray Players
Summary
If you're the type of person who rushes out to get new gadgets as they become available, you've probably already made your choice between HD DVD and Blu-Ray. For those who prefer to wait until technological format wars are settled, however, the next-gen movie battle just got a little more interesting. Back to Article

witherwings writes: on Aug 30 2007 06:06 AM DVDs are just fine by me. Yeah, HD formats are crisp, but I just don't care, it's not worth buying new stuff. I sound like my parents with VCRs when the DVD came out--except the main reason I liked the DVD was for the fastforward/rewind deal. 3D? 3D is annoying. Remember how they have all these movies at the IMAX in 3D? Unless a filmmaker specifically designed a film for 3D, I feel like that's cheap. It's not the real art experience. (Reply to this) |

Derbeste writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:15 AM It's not that I don't like new stuff.... It's that blu-ray and hd-dvd isn't "new enough". They just don't offer the leap that DVD did over VHS. The improvement in picture certainly isn't worth how expensive it would be to convert over my player and all my movies (that's even if the movies I want are even available). Even if there was a clear cut winner, I'd probably be just peachy with a plain DVD player with a good upscaler for quite a while. I prefer to wait for digital distribution to be come the standard. (Reply to this) |

digitalrelic writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:25 AM In reply to this comment (#1084949) Thing is Derbeste, you can get an HD DVD player for ~$200 nowadays that upscales your DVD's wonderfully. So you could just buy the player, buy HD DVDs for any new releases, and keep your old catalog of DVDs and upscale them and they'll still look great. Win-win situation in my opinion. (Reply to this) |

bigteddyt writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:36 AM ....not if blu-ray wins, which it will. sony lost the beta battle, i don't presume they're going to lose this one. blu-ray is a better format, and it just sounds cooler. (Reply to this) |

Crenshaw writes: on Aug 30 2007 08:06 AM I overspent on a Sony XBR 1080p LCD HDTV (and I'll do it again in a minute - man I love that TV) Anyway, I was not ready to choose an HD DVD format, so I also got an Oppo 1080p upconverting DVD player. And that thing does a VERY fine job. To compare, I looked at an HD episode of Heroes I recorded on the DVR and the same episode on the standard DVD via teh Poop. The HD version was certainly better, but not THAT much better. Certainly not enough to warrant a purchase decision yet. True, teh HD version of Heroes is in 1080p and my recorded episode is in 1080i, but when you are sitting 8 feet from the screen it won't mater that much. As for 3D - stupid. I'd get it if it was a cheap add-on because the kids would like it. But if it's going to take 2D movies and 3d-ize them, ugh, I don't want to think about it. (Reply to this) |

Merlin235 writes: on Aug 30 2007 09:04 AM Anyone who doesn't think HD is a vast improvement over DVDs just hasn't seen the difference. That's just silly. And I have a PS3, which has a Blu ray player. So I'll throw my vote on Blu ray's side. They don't have all the features of HD-DVDs yet, but that isn't a limitation on the technology, it's because the first Blu ray players didn't have the ability to PLAY the features. Now they do, that gap is closing. It'll be an interesting war to watch. Until recently, HD-DVD was a joke. Thanks to paying Paramount $150 million, they're back in it. So, basically, Paramount is a prostitute. (Reply to this) |

BrianInSD writes: on Aug 30 2007 09:58 AM Sadly, Jaws 3-D is a Universal title so, due to their sole backing of HD-DVD, we won't get to see it's Blu-Ray 3-D glory for a long, long time. So...very...very...very...sad. And thanks to Paramount's recent decision, we won't get Friday the 13th Part 3-D any time soon either! Damn you, Format War!!! (Reply to this) |

A basketball game in HD = nothing more than a shinier court. As for a TV show or movie, wow you can see there pores! Not worth a grand plus. (Reply to this) |

Mazula writes: on Aug 30 2007 12:27 PM I really dont care to see my non-3D movies turned 3D because they werent meant to be seen that way and most of the 3D movies made in the past (Jaws 3, Spy Kids 3D, etc.) have been crap. But in a few years when we see the movies that are being made with the newest 3D technology, which if you read any articles on them are much much better (or at least they sound like it) than the traditional 3D technology, such as Avatar, Monsters vs. Aliens, and other movies that will be made since this techonology has caught the eyes of quite a few top-directors (steven spielberg, peter jackson, those types), I'm sure we will all be wanting to see them in 3D at home once they are out of theaters. And itll be the way they were meant to be watched. Then these 3D players will be worth something. (Reply to this) |

Derbeste writes: on Aug 30 2007 01:07 PM I've seen the difference too. I own a 40" LCD HDTV and yeah...HD looks a bit better. But again, I'm not comparing SDTV to HDTV. I'm comparing UPSCALED DVD to true HD. Yeah...there is a slight difference. But again, it's not the leap DVD was over VHS and just not worth it to me particularly while HD-DVD and Bluray are still bickering. Yes...you can get an HD-DVD player that will upscale too... But the format may fail and just spend $200 no real advantage when I COULD have spent $50 for a player with a very decent upscaling chip. That's not even mentioning that HD-DVD movies cost 50% more than DVD movies. I'm in the tech field and not afraid of new things. I've just seen nothing COMPELLING so far. You know....It's sort of like Windows right now. Vista is technically better. Just not better enough to spend $200-300 on a new OS. (Reply to this) |

eastern2western writes: on Aug 30 2007 01:29 PM People who spend the money to purchase the latest high tech crap are the biggest suckers in the world. Why would u spend the money on a high definition dvd player when ur old one works just fine. The ads claim that the next generation disks will give u extra crap such as behind the scene productions and making of documentary. Why should the normal viewers have to sit through those stupid extra stuff when all they care about is just the movie it self. Is it worth to buy a hdvd or blueray when it drops below 200 bucks? Personally, I am going to run my dvd player till all the parts fall off because prices on those things will even drop lower. When the dvd players first came out, the minimum price was 600 bucks and those things were big as pyramids. Now, the newer ones are way more cheaper than the older ones and they have much more functions. I was sucka into buying dvd player when it was lower to 100 dollars and I am not going make that same mistake again. Hold on to your money people because electronic products depreciates really fast and your money is the only thing that matters at the end. (Reply to this) |

It may still use polarized lenses but I doubt that they'll come anywhere close to what's in theaters. (Reply to this) |

If you can't tell the diff between HD and SD, then either you don't have a big enough TV or you aren't paying attention. You have over TWO times the resolution. It's like saying you can't tell the difference between B&W and color. Just silly. Oh, and Eastern2Western, I have both and HDTV and a Blu ray player, and it is MAGNIFICENT. Sure, I paid more for it, but I'll have enjoyed it for years before you get on board. It was WELL worth it, and I'd never go back. And if I had you over for a game or movie, you'd never be able to watch you TV again. (Reply to this) |

It's good to read all the different views on HD DVD's both positive and negative. I'm surprised to find that while there are those out there who really enjoy this new format and give good reasons for doing so, there are a far more out there who have given good reasons for not caring for it and feel that the new format is very over rated. From Crenshaw%u2019s technical reasons for liking it, to Dracus' simplistic viewpoint that the crispness of HD DVD detracts from the authentic look of movies. Keep the comments coming! Anyone who bad-mouths the 3-D in Friday the 13th 3-D doesn't know what the hell they're talking about; it is movie theater 3-D that has yet to be surpassed, IMO. (Reply to this) |

pinkincide writes: on Aug 30 2007 06:43 PM There are new post production methods that give better 3D results and eliminate the eye fatigue (James Cameron's banking on it big time), and I wonder if these Mitsubishi players could be borrowing the tech from that--in a very limited sense. In any case as long as you can shut it off I don't see the harm. At the very least the kiddies will dig it. (Reply to this) |

deadSoldier writes: on Aug 30 2007 10:14 PM All this format war crap... Blu-ray is the superior format, period. It doesn't have the features that HD-DVD has, but that will end soon. Sony recently released a firmware update for the PS3 that allows you to upscale all PS1 games, PS2 games, and DVDs to full 1080p hd resolution. That's pretty badass. Obviously the same will happen for their stand-alone Blue-ray players. Plus, Blue-ray has more storage capacity (15-30GB HD-DVD vs. 25-50GB Blu-ray). Sony's also working on the 100GB and 200GB quad-layered Blu-ray discs which will primarily be used only for data storage. And really, what are the main sellers of these new high-def formats? Game consoles. Although, for the time being, XBOX 360 has out-sold the PS3, Microsoft makes it a chore to play HD-DVDs since you have to buy a $200 add-on to do it. This makes buying a PS3 a little more appealing, especially since it's a vastly underrated system. Anyway, this really is a pointless debate. HD-DVD and Microsoft sucks. (Reply to this) |

Merlin235 writes: on Aug 31 2007 06:52 AM In reply to this comment (#1086782) Eastern2Western: I don't even know where to begin. I've enjoyed my 1080p HDTV for over a year now. And actually was able to score such a deal that the same TV is still selling for $200 over what I paid a year ago. The fact is, my TV is over two times better than every other Standard Def TV out there, and that will never change. Even if the resolution of future sets get even better, I'll still have the HD I'm watching now. It won't be obsolete. It'll stick kick major butt. I don't mind people not wanting to plop down hard earned money on a better TV. I enjoy the TV I have. It's better than 90% that are out there. I watch sports and movies with a better picture on a larger screen. What's to complain about? It is better, I enjoy the better picture. I have shown the difference to everyone who wants to see, and have yet to see someone who is not completely BLOWN AWAY. I'd invite you over for a beer and a game to show you too, but I have no idea where you live. ;) (Reply to this) |
