Mitsubishi Announces 3D Blu-Ray Players
Just imagine the fun of License to Wed in HD3D!
If you're the type of person who rushes out to get new gadgets as they become available, you've probably already made your choice between HD DVD and Blu-Ray. For those who prefer to wait until technological format wars are settled, however, the next-gen movie battle just got a little more interesting.
According to SciFi.com (reporting via UberGizmo, which linked to an article at Crave), Mitsubishi has decided to enter the Blu-Ray fray -- but that isn't the cool part of the story. The company's players will bring hi-def goodness to consumers, but they won't stop there, no sir: Strap on a pair of goggles, and they'll bring it to you in 3-D. And not just specially made discs, either -- Mitsubishi claims its technology will be able to take plain old 2-D flicks and make three-dimensional magic happen on the fly.
Okay, admittedly, wearing goggles on your couch isn't really anybody's idea of fun, but in a marketplace where you can buy a regular old DVD player for the price of a tank of gas, this extra wrinkle adds some neat-o factor to Mitsubishi's wares, and should help nudge more patient (or less solvent) consumers down from the fence. Have you purchased a next-gen player (or two) yet? Does this affect your decision?

witherwings writes: on Aug 30 2007 06:06 AM DVDs are just fine by me. Yeah, HD formats are crisp, but I just don't care, it's not worth buying new stuff. I sound like my parents with VCRs when the DVD came out--except the main reason I liked the DVD was for the fastforward/rewind deal. 3D? 3D is annoying. Remember how they have all these movies at the IMAX in 3D? Unless a filmmaker specifically designed a film for 3D, I feel like that's cheap. It's not the real art experience. (Reply to this) |

Derbeste writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:15 AM It's not that I don't like new stuff.... It's that blu-ray and hd-dvd isn't "new enough". They just don't offer the leap that DVD did over VHS. The improvement in picture certainly isn't worth how expensive it would be to convert over my player and all my movies (that's even if the movies I want are even available). Even if there was a clear cut winner, I'd probably be just peachy with a plain DVD player with a good upscaler for quite a while. I prefer to wait for digital distribution to be come the standard. digitalrelic writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:25 AM In reply to this comment (#1084949) Thing is Derbeste, you can get an HD DVD player for ~$200 nowadays that upscales your DVD's wonderfully. So you could just buy the player, buy HD DVDs for any new releases, and keep your old catalog of DVDs and upscale them and they'll still look great. Win-win situation in my opinion. (Reply to this) |

bigteddyt writes: on Aug 30 2007 07:36 AM ....not if blu-ray wins, which it will. sony lost the beta battle, i don't presume they're going to lose this one. blu-ray is a better format, and it just sounds cooler. (Reply to this) |

Crenshaw writes: on Aug 30 2007 08:06 AM I overspent on a Sony XBR 1080p LCD HDTV (and I'll do it again in a minute - man I love that TV) Anyway, I was not ready to choose an HD DVD format, so I also got an Oppo 1080p upconverting DVD player. And that thing does a VERY fine job. To compare, I looked at an HD episode of Heroes I recorded on the DVR and the same episode on the standard DVD via teh Poop. The HD version was certainly better, but not THAT much better. Certainly not enough to warrant a purchase decision yet. True, teh HD version of Heroes is in 1080p and my recorded episode is in 1080i, but when you are sitting 8 feet from the screen it won't mater that much. As for 3D - stupid. I'd get it if it was a cheap add-on because the kids would like it. But if it's going to take 2D movies and 3d-ize them, ugh, I don't want to think about it. (Reply to this) |

Merlin235 writes: on Aug 30 2007 09:04 AM Anyone who doesn't think HD is a vast improvement over DVDs just hasn't seen the difference. That's just silly. And I have a PS3, which has a Blu ray player. So I'll throw my vote on Blu ray's side. They don't have all the features of HD-DVDs yet, but that isn't a limitation on the technology, it's because the first Blu ray players didn't have the ability to PLAY the features. Now they do, that gap is closing. It'll be an interesting war to watch. Until recently, HD-DVD was a joke. Thanks to paying Paramount $150 million, they're back in it. So, basically, Paramount is a prostitute. (Reply to this) |

BrianInSD writes: on Aug 30 2007 09:58 AM Sadly, Jaws 3-D is a Universal title so, due to their sole backing of HD-DVD, we won't get to see it's Blu-Ray 3-D glory for a long, long time. So...very...very...very...sad. And thanks to Paramount's recent decision, we won't get Friday the 13th Part 3-D any time soon either! Damn you, Format War!!! (Reply to this) |
